wednesDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS

Kobe done for year: Kobe Bryant won't be back on the court for the Los Angeles Lakers this season. Bryant's broken bone in his left knee still hasn't healed enough for weight-bearing exercise. With just five weeks left in their miserable season, the Lakers elected to preserve their superstar for next year, when he'll be 36.

"It's disappointing," Bryant said at the Lakers' training complex. "You want to get out there and play and perform, but at the same time, you've just got to be realistic and go from there." Bryant has played in just six games this season. He missed the first 19 games after tearing his left Achilles tendon last April, and the five-time NBA champion was back in uniform for just 10 days before fracturing the top of his shinbone in Memphis on Dec. 17.

Spurs 103, Trail Blazers 90: Patty Mills scored 15 points, and San Antonio rolled to its eighth straight win. Damian Lillard had 23 points for Portland, which lost LaMarcus Aldridge to a bruised back early in the second half.

Nets 96, Heat 95: Paul Pierce scored 17 of his 29 points in the third quarter, Mirza Teletovic scored 17 off the bench, and Brooklyn beat Miami for the third time in three tries this season. The Nets have won seven of their past eight games and are 23-9 since Jan. 1.

Kings 115, 76ers 98: Rudy Gay scored 27 points, and Sacramento extended Philadelphia's losing streak to 18 games. The 76ers lost their 14th in a row at home.

Knicks 116, Celtics 92: Carmelo Anthony scored 19 of his 34 points in the first half as New York opened a 24-point lead and coasted past Boston for its fifth straight win.

  • Anthony said that he has heard Phil Jackson will be "coming on board" with the Knicks, the strongest indication yet that the 11-time NBA champion coach will soon be taking over the team's basketball operations. "Everything's in his hands now," Anthony told reporters in Boston at the Knicks' game-day shootaround practice.

Mavericks 108, Jazz 101: Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points and is 12th on the all-time NBA scoring list as Dallas snapped a three-game road losing skid.
