ALAMEDA -- Jon Kawamoto has been named editor of the Alameda Journal, Piedmonter and Montclarion newspapers after longtime editor Connie Rux retired at the end of August.
Kawamoto previously edited The Piedmonter and The Montclarion between 2005 and 2008. Before then, he was the night city editor for the Contra Costa Times for six years.
His background also includes stints at the Los Angeles Times, Oakland Tribune, Fresno Bee, San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Daily Journal.
"The job as weeklies editor is coming full circle for me -- and I couldn't be more delighted," Kawamoto said. "I'm passionate about community news and coverage and excited about the opportunity to run these vitally important weeklies."
Before returning to the Bay Area News Group, which publishes the three weeklies, Kawamoto served as communications manager for the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, set up by the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California to raise money for Japanese victims of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters. The relief fund has become the largest Japanese American community based relief fund, raising more than $4 million in donations.
Rux retired Aug. 31 after 44 years in journalism, including as a reporter at the Orange County Register and as an editor at the Hayward Daily Review and the Eureka Times-Standard.
Rux described her time at the helm of the three weeklies as "a wonderful
"We've seen a lot of big news over those years, a lot of changes, and I'm grateful to be a part of it," she said. "I also leave with good memories of the people I've met and with whom I've worked. We may not have always agreed on everything, but we had lively discussions."
Kawamoto began work Aug. 29.
"The Alameda Journal, The Montclarion and The Piedmonter all play a key role in not only informing the communities -- but by playing key roles in the identities of the communities," he said. "I can't wait to get started at the hard work of providing news coverage."
