Highlanders take Willits Classic The Piedmont High girls basketball team beat Fortuna 57-50 on Dec. 1 to win the Willits Classic Tournament. The Highlanders outscored the Huskies 14-8 in the second quarter to take control. Piedmont's Lauren Seyranian, who scored 15 points in the championship game, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Teammate JoNae Gonzales, who scored a game-high 21 points in the championship game including five 3-pointers, was an all-tournament selection.
Bertholdt MVP in Sonora Tournament Alameda High's Marie Bertholdt was named Most Valuable Player in the Sonora Tournament, in which the Hornets finished second. Bertholdt scored 15 points in the championship game on Dec. 1, which Alameda lost 58-46 to Del Oro-Loomis. She also scored a game-high 24 points in a 75-28 semifinal win over Johansen-Modesto on Nov. 30 and a game-high 19 points in a 60-40 first-round victory over Sonora on Nov. 29.
St. Mary's wins tournament title The St. Mary's High girls basketball team defeated St. Ignatius-San Francisco 71-51 on Dec. 1 to win the Marin Catholic Ladycat Classic title. The Panthers outscored the Wildcats 33-19 in the second half for the win. St. Mary's Gabby Green, who scored a game-high 22 points in the championship game, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Teammate Mikayla Cowling, who had a game-high 10 field goals for 20 points in the title game, was an all-tournament selection along with Elexis Goodwin, who had 10 points in the championship game and 13 points in a 72-31 semifinal win over Marin Catholic.
On deck Paris Twins Classic championship game, girls basketball, Piedmont High, Dec. 8, 2:30 p.m. -- The host Highlanders have Rodriguez-Fairfield, Marin Catholic and Washington on their side of the bracket. Island Classic championship game, boys basketball, St. Joseph Notre Dame High, Dec. 8 -- Crosstown school Encinal is one of the teams competing in this eight-team tournament, which started on Dec. 6. Results were not available at press time. Berkeley at Deer Valley, boys basketball, Dec. 11, 7:30 p.m. -- The Yellowjackets face a huge challenge from Kentucky-bound Marcus Lee and the Wolverines.
Stars of the week Oderah Chidom, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Chidom scored a game-high 20 points, including 13 in the final 12 minutes, and grabbed 16 rebounds in a 51-40 nonleague victory over Archbishop Mitty-San Jose on Dec. 1. JoNae Gonzales, Piedmont girls basketball -- Gonzales scored a game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Highlanders in their 57-50 victory over Fortuna in the championship game of the Willits Classic on Dec. 1. Darrien Washington, Skyline girls basketball -- Washington scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked six shots in the Titans' 50-47 victory over Washington-San Francisco on Nov. 28. Keilan Benjamin, El Cerrito football -- Benjamin rushed for a game-high 136 yards on 18 carries, including touchdowns of 11 and 60 yards, and completed 11 of his 17 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in the Gauchos' 31-28 loss to Marin Catholic on Dec. 1 in the North Coast Section Division III championship game at Pinole Valley. Marie Bertholdt, Alameda girls basketball -- Bertholdt was named MVP of the Sonora Tournament after scoring 58 points in three games, including 24 in a semifinal victory over Johansen-Modesto on Nov. 30. Keiland Callum, Encinal boys basketball -- Callum poured in a game-high 33 points in a 65-56 nonleague victory over Kennedy-Fremont on Nov. 28. His impressive scoring included an 11 for 13 performance from the free-throw line. Gabby Green, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Green was named MVP of the Marin Catholic Ladycat Classic after scoring 48 points in three games, including 22 in a 71-51 championship game win over St. Ignatius on Dec. 1. Marcus Harris, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Harris scored a team-high 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, in the Pilots' 57-40 victory over Righetti-Santa Maria in the Crusader Classic on Nov. 30.
