It's time for some potty talk. Lone Tree Way has become an extended shopping mall for the East County. Locals are spending more and more time on Lone Tree as they combine their shopping trips to save gas. More time out usually means the need for a restroom. The options, nestled in multiple stores and restaurants, are many. Some relief stations are fine. Others are to be avoided.

East County shoppers, interviewed at random, talked about the plusses and minuses of various potty stops. Oddly enough, some establishments got both good and bad ratings from different people. Walmart got praised by one and panned by two others.

Jan McMillen of Discovery Bay has good words for Walmart. "I like the easy access and the restrooms are kept clean. I feel the same about Penny's, Target, and the WinCo supermarket," she said. "I try to avoid gas stations. I don't trust them."

Oakley's Arleen Legato feels exactly the opposite. "Walmart is bad. Various things in the restroom don't work. Sometimes the toilets don't flush. It's a very messy restroom," she said. "I don't like the Target restrooms either. If I need a restroom I go to Bed and Bath or Trader Joe's where it's clean and everything works."

Ken Hansen of Antioch is a traveling sales rep who's out on Lone Tree a lot. He also gives Walmart a bad grade. "I use fast food places more often than not. Carl's Junior is very good. So are the restrooms in WinCo and Target. I avoid gas the stations and public parks. They're usually not attended to and they aren't kept up. They get pretty filthy."

"Some of the gas station restrooms are gross as well as filthy," agreed Ruth Johnson of Oakley. "I prefer to use Target or Trader Joe's. Their restrooms are clean and more conveniently located for me."

Casey Lopez of Oakley also prefers Target and adds Cost Plus World Market and Starbucks. "They are good rooms for kids. They are kept very clean," she said. "I won't use the ones at gas stations because they're mostly filthy, nasty and gross."

Antioch's Carol Fontaine has good words for Target and Kohl's as well as a long list of others. "Lone Tree shopping has grown so fast that there are many good places to use a restroom. The ones to avoid are in gas stations."

Brian Whitman of Brentwood is even more complimentary. "Lone Tree shopping is relatively new. There are plenty of good choices and hardly a bad choice," he said. "If I had to pin a gold star on one it would be the Sports Chalet. It's super clean. I give Barnes and Noble high marks too."

Marge Chavez of Brentwood has a general complaint. "The majority of the places in Antioch say, 'Customers Only' and I don't like that. It's particularly true of restaurants. But I do like Panda Express where I'm welcome without buying," she said. "Gas stations also are pretty good and welcome walk-ins."

Eugenia Luomas of Discovery Bay is candid. "When I have to go I use any restroom available. I don't worry. I wash my hands a lot and favor places with posted 'hand wash' signs. The one restroom I don't like is in T.J. Max. The door lock is broken and the paper dispenser works poorly."
