Freedom wins third straight

  • Freedom High's football team won its third consecutive game, beating Heritage 31-24 in both teams' Bay Valley Athletic League opener Sept. 28. Joe Mixon scored the game-winning touchdown and intercepted the rallying Patriots on their final possession. Both squads have a bye this week.

    LMC blows by West Valley

  • The Los Medanos College football team used a big second quarter to blow by West Valley 58-35 on Sept. 29. Shawn Vasquez rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns while QB Mike Behr was 11 of 16 passing for 246 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs' defense came up with four interceptions. LMC scored 49 points in the first half and outscored West Valley 35-14 in the second quarter.

    Wolverines win BVAL clash

  • The Deer Valley High girls golf team stayed undefeated in Bay Valley Athletic League play after topping a tough Heritage team 233-241 at Lone Tree on Sept. 27. Heritage's Megan Conder was the medalist with a 2-over 37. Four Deer Valley players shot under 50, led by Taylor Coover's 42.

  • Antioch at Deer Valley, football, Oct. 5, 7 p.m. -- The Mayor's Cup is up for grabs when the Panthers and Wolverines battle. Both teams are off to fast starts this season.

  • Liberty at Heritage, girls volleyball, Oct. 9, 6:30 p.m. -- The Lions and Patriots square off in what looks like a wide open BVAL race.

    Stars of the week

  • Elbert Hamilton, Antioch football -- The senior rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Panthers over Mt. Diablo 48-0 on Sept. 28 in their final nonleague game of the year.

  • Craijon Menafee, Pittsburg football -- Menafee scored on runs of 2 and 11 yards to help the Pirates win their BVAL opener 29-8 over Liberty on Sept. 28.

  • Andrea Neilson, Freedom girls golf -- Neilson led the Falcons to another BVAL victory, carding a 3-over par 38 at the Delta View Golf Course on Sept. 27. Freedom beat Pittsburg 233-268.

  • Courtney Samuda, Heritage girls tennis -- The freshman won both of her matches at No. 1 singles to help the Patriots earn BVAL victories over Pittsburg and Deer Valley.
