BAY POINT -- Eight dozen eggs. Those are just some of the ingredients needed to cook a big breakfast for a hungry crowd of 60 on the last Saturday of the month at the First AME Community Church in Bay Point
Just ask Lorraine Lewis, a church member who helps cook the meal in the church kitchen, along with fellow church member, Arnetta Jones and church pastor Michael Permillion Sr.
"Usually I'm on the egg detail," Lewis said. "We start cooking at 7, and we start feeding at 8. I do scrambled eggs, (Jones) does the meat and potatoes, and the pastor, he is the pancake master; he is flipping all the pancakes."
In addition to the kitchen efforts of Jones, Lewis and Permillion, some other church members help serve the breakfast, which is open to anyone in the community.
Jones is president of the church's Women's Missionary Society, which helped launch the program almost three years ago. It took awhile for the word to get out in the community, but nowadays about 60 people show up for the monthly breakfast, including many who are repeat customers.
"It's a nice community feeling. We get people who come every month," Jones said.
She said it made sense to have the free breakfast on the last Saturday of the month, given that tends to be the time when people who are struggling financially can run short of food and money.
Jones goes on a big shopping trip on the Friday before the Saturday breakfast using church funds to buy the food.
"It's just something our church supports," she said. "We serve eggs, bacon and sausage. It's a nice meal.... It's not cold cereal.
Some of those who come for the breakfast end up taking breakfast food home in to-go containers.
"A lot of them, they eat here and take a meal to go," Jones said.
