Local athletes make college picks official

  • Several East Contra Costa athletes made their choices for college official, as they signed National Letters of Intent Nov. 14-21 in the early signing period. For Heritage, signees included baseball player Josh Calmerin (Sonoma State), basketball players Sabrina Engelstad (Saint Mary's) and Erin Asher (California Baptist), softball players Malia Rivers (Georgia) and Destinee Williams (Bethune-Cookman), swimmers Ryan Barsanti (Wisconsin) and Haley Rose Love (Washington State). For Deer Valley, basketball player Marcus Lee signed with Kentucky and girls golfer Taylor Coover signed with Cal State San Marcos.

    Heritage starts strong

  • The Heritage High boys basketball team defeated McNair-Stockton, 66-48, at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic at Newark Memorial High on Nov. 24. Aaron Berry had 13 points, six rebounds and two assists for the Patriots.

  • Freedom vs. Salesian at Gridley Invitational, boys basketball, Dec. 6 -- The Patriots will face the Pride, the No. 10 team in the nation according to MaxPreps, in the Gridley Invitational Tournament.

  • Los Medanos at Comet Classic, women's basketball, Nov. 29-Dec. 1 -- The Mustangs head to Contra Costa College to compete in the Comet Classic.

  • Deer Valley at Winter Classic, girls basketball, Nov. 29-Dec. 1 -- Deer Valley will travel to San Ramon to play in the Dougherty Valley Winter Classic. Last season, Deer Valley went undefeated in Bay Valley Athletic League play and made it to the CIF Division I Quarterfinals.

  • Bishop O'Dowd at Deer Valley, boys basketball, Dec. 1 -- The Wolverines (2-0) will host the Dragons in their third game of their nonleague schedule.

    Stars of the week

  • Marcus Lee, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Lee had 24 points, 25 rebounds and 7 assists in the Wolverines thrilling double overtime victory over Sacramento.

  • Kendall Smith, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Smith scored 48 points in a 97-96 double overtime win against Sacramento, and was also named Player of the Game.

  • Steenalisa Tilcock, Freedom cross country -- Tilcock, a senior, finished 58th at the Division I state cross country championships on Nov. 24. Tilcock finished the 3.1-mile course at Woodward Park in Fresno in 18:56, as she was the seventh-fastest runner from the North Coast Section in the Division I race.
