Chamber members hear of district problems: Representatives of the sanitary and water districts and the City Council heard speakers for the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce tell their views on more effective cooperation and the need for general planning at a special meeting of the chamber in the City Hall last week Thursday evening. More than 30 persons attended the meeting.

District board members and members of the chamber agreed after the meeting that it had been helpful in clearing the air of possible misunderstandings and of demonstrating the willingness of the chamber to assist the district boards with their problems.

Some New Year's resolutions for Bethel Island: It's that time of year again, when it is custom to make New Year's resolutions.

And perhaps, the primary reason for the community to make is that the Bethel Island Area Specific Plan is finalized before too long into the year, and that its final draft has something for everyone. The plan should not open with the possibility of a yearlong battle concerning land use, which could hold everything up.

The second most important resolution for the community would concern the big issue coming on the horizon -- the designation of wetlands in the Delta. The unified pitch on this issue should be that the Delta lands were originally sold under the Swamp and Overflow Lands Act way back in the early 1900s for the sole purpose of reclaiming the land. Reclaiming means filling, draining and removing all aspects of wetlands so the land can be useful for agriculture or development.

Probably the oldest issue concerning the Delta and in dire need of resolution statewide is levee maintenance and water exporting. Since history (many years of squabbling) has proved a standoff exists, it appears 1988 will be the year for both sides to bend a bit and work at a compromise. The north has got to realize that the south needs water, and the south has got to realize that water quality depends on the north's Delta levees being in tip top shape.
