Bestsellers are hugely popular in the library, just as they are at the bookstore or on Amazon. New York Times bestseller "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn currently has 969 holds, while the library owns 102 copies of the book. (We own 13 copies of the ebook version, with 249 people on that waiting list.)

"50 Shades of Gray" by E.L. James, published in the early part of 2012, still has 318 holds, with the library owning 136 copies. What to do while waiting for your request to get filled ...?

The library can help! Library staff read-alike lists have two huge advantages: They give people something to read while they wait for their number to come up on a waiting list, and they also give folks something to read that might be similar to a title they absolutely couldn't get enough of.

Some of the recommended "Gone Girl" read-alikes include: "Still Missing" by Chevy Stevens, "Sister" by Rosamund Lupton, "Await Your Reply" by Dan Chaon, "Turn of Mind" by Alice LaPlante, "In the Woods" by Tana French, "Threats" by Amelia Gray, "The 19th Wife" by David Ebershoff and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" by Patricia Highsmith.

For the saucier tastes in all of us, look for 50 Shades read-alikes "Henry and June" by Anais Nin, "Endless Love" by Scott Spencer, "Addicted" by Zane, "Enchanted" by Nancy Madore, "Forbidden Pleasure" by Laura Leigh, "Belle de Jour, Sweet Temptation" by Maya Banks and "Selfish is the Heart" by Megan Hart.
