PITTSBURG -- A two-alarm response to reports of a house fire in Pittsburg was cancelled after fire crews discovered the house was only filled with smoke, authorities said.

Firefighters arrived at 7:38 p.m. to the two-story home in the 1000 block of Mayport Drive after neighbors called to report they believed an elderly resident may still be inside, Contra Costa County Fire Battalion Chief Robert Marshall said. Crews scanned the home and found that no one was home, and that there was no fire, only heavy smoke.

"It filled up the entire house, which caused the second alarm, plus the concern of a potential rescue," Marshall said.

A pot on the stove caused the large amount of smoke, which caused only minor smoke damage, Marshall said. No one was injured in the incident.
