  • At the Martinez Library, Story Time programs are free.

    Mother Goose Time: 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 6. For babies and toddlers, ages 0-5, it features songs, bounces, tickles and simple stories.

    Family Night Stories and Special Events: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 24-Nov. 5 (no session Oct. 15). Kids can come in their pajamas to listen to a story and enjoy a special event.

    Model Rockets! 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 during Family Night Stories and Special Events. There will be a model rocket story time with actual model rockets for viewing.

    Fall Crochet & Knitting Workshop: 5:15-6:15 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 17-Oct. 22. Kids and teens can explore both crafts with the help of experts in the six-week workshop sponsored by the American Needlework Association. Materials are free for those 18 and younger. Adults may attend, but must provide their own supplies. Online registration is required and ends at 11 p.m. Sept. 15.

    Contra Costa County Master Gardeners: 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18. Adults are invited to hear the Master Gardener Teressa Lippert discuss "What Went Wrong in Your Vegetable Garden and How to Fix It" and how to prevent problems in winter gardens.

    Martinez Library Book Club: 6:45 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month. On Sept. 18, the discussion will be on the summer reading selections, including "Outlander," by Diana Gabaldon, "Rumors of Peace," by Ella Leffland and "The Rhetoric of Death," by Judith Rock.

    Mother Goose Time: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; and also 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays. There will be songs, rhymes, bounces, tickles and simple stories for tots up to age 3.

    Preschool Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Thursdays features stories and songs for preschoolers and toddlers, ages 3-5.

    Saturday Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Saturdays, for babies, preschoolers and kids. There will be stories, songs and more.

    Afternoon Storytime: 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays, beginning Sept. 21. There will be songs, rhymes, bounces and simple stories to introduce children ages 0-3 to literacy.

    Puppet Show: Tales of the Enchanted Forest: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 25. Nick Barone and his original puppets will present a magical performance with animals, pixies and a talking tree, complete with songs.

    Lego Creators Club: 2-3 p.m. Oct. 6. Kids can meet other builders and get tips, themes and challenges every month, plus book tie-ins to take home.

    Rockets! 2-3 p.m. Sept. 29. Kids and teens and the whole family can make a simple rocket and launch it at the library. The air-compressed launcher is safe. Those who missed Night of 1,000 Inventions, or want to make a new rocket are welcome.

    Make Recycled Art for Library Fundraiser: 3:30-5:30 p.m. Sept. 20. Teens can make art from recycled materials to be sold at the Art, Jazz & Wine Fest on Oct. 6-7, in Pleasant Hill to raise funds for teen programs at the library. There will be materials and instructors as well as opportunities for participants to create their own objects. The library is partnering with recycling coordinators from Allied Waste Management of Contra Costa and Solano.

    Wii Thursdays for Teens: 3-4:30 p.m. Sept. 13, 27, Oct. 11. 25. Teens are invited meet others and play games on the library's Wii system.

    Pleasant Hill Teen Advisory Group (TAG): 3:30-5 p.m. Oct. 10. Teens ages 13-18 can meet other teens and the young adult librarian every second Wednesday of the month in Room A to create fun programs and suggest new resources. Participants can receive volunteer hours for their time.

    Chess Instruction with a Certified Chess Coach: 3-5 p.m. Sept. 28. Teens and young people interested in learning chess or improving their strategies may attend the free class led by an instructor at the Berkeley Chess School who also has private chess students. The event is funded through Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library.

    Contra Costa Teen Chess Club: 3-5 p.m. Fridays. Students 12-17 can get instruction and participate in friendly matches and tournaments. Games are in the Baldwin Room and participants who have them are encouraged to bring their own chess board and pieces.

    Afternoon Book Discussion: 1-2:30 p.m. Oct. 5. Adults can read with others at the library and discuss "The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington" by Jennet Conant.

    Pleasant Hill Library Book Discussion: 6:30 p.m. in Room A. On Sept. 18, the discussion will be on Laura Hillenbrand's "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption."

    Volunteer Orientation: 3-4 p.m. Sept. 15, 29, Oct. 13, 27. Teens and adults can apply to be a library volunteer. Participants will tour the library with a trained staff members who will give them the details of volunteering.

    One-On-One Computer Tutor: 11 a.m.-noon and noon-1 p.m. Sept. 19. Adults can scheduled an appointment for a one-hour, one-on-one computer training session to learn the basics and set up an email account, print and save on the library computer, use Microsoft Word and search the Internet. Select tutors may also offer assistance on digital gadgets like laptops, smart phones, e-readers and cameras. (Tutors may not be completely familiar with all personal devices and library computers may not offer software compatibility).

    English Conversation Practice for Adults: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Adults can practice speaking and listening to English in a casual group run by the library staff and volunteers.

    Las Juntas Artists Association: In partnership with the library, each month the group exhibits the works of different artists during regular library hours.
