Vikings rule the pool

  • The Diablo Valley College women's water polo team is enjoying an incredibly successful fall season. The Vikings remained unbeaten in Big 8 play and improved to 22-3 overall when they edged American River 8-7 on Oct. 17. Taylor Henry led the way with four goals. Goalkeeper Katie Campbell stopped nine shots and had two assists.

    Falcons edge Eagles

  • The College Park High volleyball team survived a five-game thriller against Clayton Valley to earn a big Diablo Valley Athletic League win on Oct. 16. The Falcons were led by Annelise Tappe, who provided 21 kills, 15 digs and two assists. Rachel Henry added 40 assists and 11 digs. College Park also beat Mt. Diablo on Oct. 18 to improve to 8-1 in DVAL play.

    Eagles win ClayCord Cup

  • Behind brothers Joe and Michael Protheroe, the Clayton Valley Charter High football team claimed the ClayCord Cup for the first time since 2008 with a 49-6 romp over Concord on Oct. 19. Joe Protheroe rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns while his younger brother also ran for three scores. The win was Clayton Valley's seventh straight.

    Wiser commits to Stanford

  • Miramonte High's Charlie Wiser has verbally committed to Stanford to swim and play water polo. The senior is the reigning DFAL MVP and East Bay Player of the Year in water polo and has played a key role in keeping the Matadors undefeated against East Bay competition this year. He is also one of the section's top swimmers with the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley being his specialties.

  • College of Siskiyous at Diablo Valley, football, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. -- The Vikings finally get underway in conference play when they host the surging Eagles. Siskiyous is 7-1, but DVC has won four straight.

  • Northgate at Clayton Valley, football, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. -- This game will go a long way toward deciding the DVAL title. Both teams enter unbeaten in league play with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

  • NCS playoff brackets, water polo, Oct. 28 -- Brackets for the North Coast Section Division I and II tournaments in water polo will be announced on the cifncs.org website. All six Lamorinda teams should receive favorable seeds.

  • NCS Division I championship, girls golf, Oct. 28, 8 a.m. -- Qualified teams and individuals will head north to the Windsor Golf Course for the section meet. Top finishers will then advance to the NorCal championships.

    Stars of the week

  • Alex Manuli, Alhambra girls water polo -- The senior attacker led the Bulldogs to the James Logan Autumn Invite title Oct. 19 with 10 goals in three games. She scored four in a 9-7 championship game win over Logan.

  • Morgan Borch, Las Lomas girls volleyball -- Borch helped the Knights improve to 8-1 in DFAL play by providing 14 kills, 14 digs and two aces in a three-game win over Dublin on Oct. 18.

  • McKenna DeLong, Clayton Valley girls golf -- DeLong fired a 2-over 73 to win the DVAL tournament Oct. 20 at the Diablo Creek Golf Course. Her effort also helped the Eagles win the team title.

  • Jamari Pope, Ygnacio Valley football -- The senior quarterback helped the Warriors edge Mt. Diablo 57-52 on Oct. 19 by passing for 252 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 165 yards and two scores.
