  • At the Martinez Library, Story Time programs are free.

    Mother Goose Time: 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Feb. 26. Best for ages 6 months to 3 years old, it features, bounces, tickles and rhymes, followed by a simple craft time for motor skills and creative expression.

    Pajama Time: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 28. Best for kids ages 4-6 who can listen to the story of Art Dog, the amazing artist of Dogopolis, and create art of their own with watercolors, pastels, markers and more. Participants can come in their jammies, but should wear a smock for the special art story time.

    Mother Goose Time: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; and also 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays. There will be songs, rhymes, bounces, tickles and simple stories for tots up to age 3.

    Saturday Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Saturdays, for babies, preschoolers and kids. There will be stories, songs and more.

    Afternoon Storytime: 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays. There will be songs, rhymes, bounces and simple stories to introduce children ages 0-3 to literacy.

    Lego Creators Club: 2-3 p.m. Feb. 2. Kids ages 5-11 can let their imaginations run wild at the monthly get-together. There will be new themes, tips and challenges, plus book tie-ins to take home.

    Wii Thursdays for Teens: 3-4:30 p.m. Jan. 24, Feb. 7, 21. Teens are invited meet others and play games on the library's Wii system.

    Chinese New Year Lion Dance! 1 p.m. Jan. 29. The White Crane Lion Dancers will bring their colorful and gymnastic display and drumming to the library in anticipation of Chinese New Year. All ages welcome.

    Finding Related Connections: Who Are Your Ancestors and Who Are Your Cousins? 1-3 p.m. Jan. 26. June Ralston Anderson of the Contra Costa County Genealogical Society will teach beginners (adults and seniors) genealogy research.

    Pleasant Hill Library Book Discussion: 6:30 p.m. in Room A. On Feb. 19, the discussion will be on David Brook's "The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement."

    Afternoon Book Discussion: 1-2:30 p.m. Feb. 1. Adults can read with others at the library and discuss "Great House," by Nicole Krauss.

    Volunteer Orientation: 3-4 p.m. Jan. 19, Feb. 2, 16. Teens and adults can apply to be a library volunteer. Participants will tour the library with a trained staff members who will give them the details of volunteering.

    Volunteer Training for Adult Literacy Tutors: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 23, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 26 and Feb. 2 (all 14 hours required). Space is limited and registration is required by Jan. 17.

    One-On-One Computer Tutor: 11 a.m.-noon and noon-1 p.m. Jan. 23. Adults can scheduled an appointment for a one-hour, one-on-one computer training session to learn the basics and set up an email account, print and save on the library computer, use Microsoft Word and search the Internet. Select tutors may also offer assistance on digital gadgets like laptops, smart phones, e-readers and cameras. (Keep in mind that tutors may not be completely familiar with all personal devices and library computers may not offer software compatibility).

    English Conversation Practice for Adults: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Adults can practice speaking and listening to English in a casual group run by the library staff and volunteers.

    Doorstep Farmers: 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays. Pick up a box of organic fruits and vegetables every week at the library by signing up with Doorstep Farmers, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) service supporting local agriculture and sustainable healthy living. All participants have the choice of a 5 percent discount or donating 5 percent to the Pleasant Hill Library.
