Falcons on top of DVAL

  • Sophomore Joe DeMers scored 18 points to lead the College Park High boys basketball team to a 66-41 win over Berean Christian on Jan. 15 to continue its hot start to Diablo Valley Athletic League play. Seb Flores added 12 points for the Falcons, who improved to 5-0 in league play with the victory.

    Spartans top Richmond

  • The De La Salle High soccer team continues to build momentum. The Spartans beat Richmond 2-1 in nonleague action on Jan. 19 on two goals by Joey Jones to continue a six-game unbeaten streak. De La Salle also recently tied Foothill 0-0 and beat California 2-0 in EBAL play to remain in the league title hunt.

    Broncos win three straight

  • Northgate High's girls basketball team has won three straight Diablo Valley Athletic League games. The Broncos' most challenging victory came against Berean Christian on Jan. 18. Madison Casten scored 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers, in the 52-49 victory. Talia Arauzo added 14 points for the Broncos, who held off the Eagles late rally.

    Mats keep rolling

  • The Miramonte High girls basketball team improved its overall record to 16-1 with a 70-54 victory over Clovis West at the MLK Showdown at St. Mary's-Stockton on Jan. 19. Freshman guard Sabrina Ionescu was the Matadors' top scorer with 19 points. Breanna Alford added 14 points and seven rebounds. Miramonte has a big challenge in store this weekend when it plays defending Division II state champion Archbishop Mitty-San Jose at the Campolindo Shootout on Jan. 26 at 5 p.m.

  • Alhambra at Dougherty Valley, girls soccer, Jan. 25, 6:15 p.m. -- As the second half of DFAL play gets underway, the Bulldogs will try to continue the momentum gained from a solid first half.

  • Miramonte at Acalanes, boys soccer, Jan. 25, 6:15 p.m. -- The Dons are one of the area's top teams this season. Can the Matadors slow down their rival?

  • Campolindo Shootout, girls basketball, Jan. 26, all day -- The event is actually at Bentley HS this year, but features plenty of intriguing matchups. Miramonte takes on Archbishop Mitty at 3:30 p.m. while Carondelet plays Berkeley at 5 p.m. in two of the top games of the day.

  • Annelise Ito, Diablo Valley women's basketball -- Ito had 15 points and 10 rebounds to help the Vikings earn their first Big 8 win 74-59 over Cosumnes River on Jan. 18.

  • Kathryn Buffo, Las Lomas girls soccer -- The senior goalkeeper stopped seven shots as the Knights shut out Acalanes 2-0 on Jan. 18.

  • Spencer Clark, Mt. Diablo boys basketball -- Clark scored 27 points to lift the Red Devils to an 82-48 victory over Berean Christian on Jan. 16.

  • Laura Hickey, Campolindo girls basketball -- Hickey had a monster game of 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cougars to a key 62-50 DFAL win over Dublin on Jan. 18.

  • Joey Jones, De La Salle soccer -- Jones scored both of the Spartans' goals in a 2-1 victory over Richmond on Jan. 19. His goal in the 59th minute was the game winner.

  • Hailey Pascoe, Clayton Valley girls basketball -- Pascoe scored 29 points (including four 3-pointers) in the Eagles' 81-44 win over College Park on Jan. 16 for first place in the DVAL.

  • Joe Pelletier, Northgate boys basketball -- Pelletier's 18 points led the Broncos to a 64-51 victory over Berean Christian in DVAL play on Jan. 18.

  • Kiran Shastri, Miramonte boys basketball -- Shastri led the Matadors to back-to-back wins over Alhambra and San Marin Jan. 18-19. He scored 25 points with six rebounds and five assists in the 72-58 win over San Marin.
