Falcons on top of DVAL

  • The College Park High girls soccer teams earned a pair of close wins to hold onto first place in the Diablo Valley Athletic League standings. The Falcons recovered from a halftime deficit to beat Concord 3-2 on Jan. 31. Dominike Tambazidis scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute. Jacquelyn Scharff scored both goals in College Park's 2-1 win over Ygnacio Valley on Jan. 29.

    Knights' Stom, Howard commit

  • Las Lomas High football players Derrick Stom and Mitchell Howard have committed to Army, according to their high school coach, Doug Longero. Stom, a 6-foot-1, 276 pound offensive lineman, was an All-Diablo Foothill Athletic League first-team selection on both sides of the ball this past season. Howard has been honored as the league's top kicker the last two years.

    Dons earn DFAL title

  • The Acalanes High boys soccer team has captured its third consecutive Diablo Foothill Athletic League title. The Dons remained unbeaten on the season with a 2-0 win over Dublin on Feb. 1. Ben Croze had a goal and an assist in the match. Max Mirner provided the goal in a 1-0 victory over Dougherty Valley earlier in the week.

    Pitts, Spartans go 3-0

  • Elliott Pitts led the De La Salle High basketball team to three wins during the week of Jan. 28. Pitts scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds as the Spartans beat Monte Vista 54-42 on Jan. 31 to avenge an earlier loss. The Arizona commit then had 27 points, five rebounds and six steals to help De La Salle beat Foothill-Santa Ana 59-42 at the Nike Extravaganza two days later.

  • Dublin at Campolindo, girls soccer, Feb. 8, 6:15 p.m. -- The Cougars have already wrapped up the DFAL title, but will try to close out the regular season with a win over the league's second-place team.

  • Clayton Valley at College Park, girls basketball, Feb. 8, 7 p.m. -- The Eagles will try to stay undefeated in DVAL action against a College Park squad that has only lost once in league action.

  • NCS dual championships, wrestling, Feb. 9, 10 a.m. -- De La Salle, which has won six straight dual meet section titles, will again be a favorite to capture an NCS championship at the event hosted by James Logan.

  • NCS seedings, soccer, Feb. 10, approximately noon -- NCS playoff brackets for boys and girls soccer will be selected and announced. Brackets can be found on the NCS website.

    Stars of the week

  • Elena Ala, Diablo Valley women's basketball -- Ala powered the Vikings to a 57-48 win over American River on Jan. 29 with 16 points, five steals and four assists.

  • Ben Reiter, College Park boys soccer -- Reiter scored two goals as the Falcons upended Ygnacio Valley 3-0 on Jan. 29.

  • Ashley Allen, Clayton Valley girls basketball -- Allen had 31 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Eagles past Northgate 53-34 on Feb. 1 for their ninth straight win.

  • Joey Jones, De La Salle boys soccer -- Jones continued his scoring steak, netting both goals in the Spartans' 2-1 win over San Ramon Valley on Jan. 29.

  • Emily Orwig, Campolindo girls soccer -- The junior's 11th goal of the season lifted the Cougars over Alhambra 1-0 on Feb. 1 in a game between two of the DFAL's top squads.

  • Eric Rogstad, Acalanes boys soccer -- The Dons' goalkeeper posted shutouts in wins over Northgate, Dougherty Valley and Dublin during the week of Jan. 28.

  • Jen Saelio, Las Lomas girls basketball -- Though the Knights fell to Acalanes 67-63 on Jan. 28, Saelio had a big game with 27 points.

  • Ethan Walchirk, Northgate boys basketball -- The senior scored 16 points to lead the Broncos to a 46-37 victory over Clayton Valley on Feb. 1.
