Attorneys sought to help coach in Mock Trial

Practicing and retired attorneys are needed to assist students in the 32nd annual Contra Costa County High School Mock Trial program held throughout February, at the Martinez courthouses.

Second- and third-year law students are also invited to participate with the scoring process.

This year's case is the hit-and-run trial (with a texting-while-driving element mixed in): People v. Vega.

Teams of high school students work with teachers and attorney coaches to prepare their version of the criminal case, from both the prosecution and defense perspectives.

Students assume the roles of trial attorneys, pretrial motion attorneys, witnesses, clerks, bailiffs, artists and court journalists.

Real-life judges and attorneys score their performance and provide feedback. The county's champion advances to the state finals.

The Mock Trial is coordinated by the Contra Costa County Office of Education and was created to help students acquire a working knowledge of the judicial system, develop analytical and communication skills, and understand their responsibilities as participating members of society.
