Falcons cash in on second chance

  • The College Park High boys basketball team made the most of its second chance in the postseason. The Falcons, who lost in the North Coast Section Division II quarterfinals, won their first two NorCal regional playoff games as the No. 11 seed. Seb Flores scored 16 points while Joe DeMers and Steven Daily both added 14 in a 67-59 NorCal quarterfinal win over Mt. Eden on March 9. Results of the March 12 semifinal at St. Francis-Mountain View were not available at press time.

    Knights win thriller

  • The Las Lomas High baseball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park 8-7 on March 5. Sawyer Geiseke hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to start the comeback win. Geiseke finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs while Nick Halle was 3 for 4 with two runs.

    Matadors' season comes to a close

  • A fantastic season came to an end for the Miramonte High girls basketball team when it lost a 63-62 heartbreaker to St. Mary's-Stockton in the first round of the Open Division Northern California regional playoffs on March 8. The Matadors had a chance to win or force overtime, but missed the front end of a one-and-one with about two seconds left. Sabrina Ionsecu scored 19 points in the loss while Breanna Alford added 12.

    Spartans top Cougars on diamond

  • A game between defending North Coast Section baseball champions De La Salle (Division I) and Campolindo (D-II) highlighted action at the DFAL-EBAL Challenge on March 9. De La Salle prevailed 2-0 with A.J. Puckett and Andrew Buckley combining on the three-hit shutout. Justin Hooper and Ray Bartolomucci drove in the Spartans' runs. Campo's Trent Shelton allowed just one earned run and went 2 for 3 at the plate, but took the loss.

    On deck

  • Queen of the Mountain, softball, March 14-16, 4 p.m. -- Several local teams, including Concord, Clayton Valley and Carondelet, will participate in the annual tournament, which moves to the Pleasanton Sports Park this year. Defending champion Amador Valley is also back in the field.

  • NorCal championships, basketball, March 16, all day -- The Open, Division I and Division II championships will be played at Sacramento's Sleep Train Pavilion. The lower divisions will be held at American Canyon High.

  • Deer Valley tournament, boys volleyball, March 16, all day. -- The Wolverines host one of the top local boys volleyball tournaments of the season.

  • Campolindo at Acalanes, baseball, March 19, 4 p.m. -- The Diablo Foothill Athletic League season gets underway with a heavyweight battle between two defending NCS champions.

  • Jon Pacha, Alhambra boys baseball -- The junior allowed just one run in 6 2/3 innings pitched as the Bulldogs took down Amador Valley 5-1 in the DFAL-EBAL Challenge on March 9.

  • Elliott Pitts, De La Salle boys basketball -- Pitts was the Spartans' leading scorer in two Division I NorCal playoffs victories. His week included a 21-point, eight-rebound effort in a 43-39 win over San Leandro in the quarterfinals.

  • Natalie Romeo, Carondelet girls basketball -- The junior guard scored a career-high 34 points to go along with six rebounds and five steals as the Cougars beat Archbishop Mitty 89-69 on March 16 in the Open Division NorCal regional quarterfinals.
