A group from the Martinez Senior Center, including from left, Bill Brown, Kathi Curry, Cynthia Baker and Emogene Thomas, took a moment to catch up on the community news in the Pleasant Hill/Martinez Record during a whirlwind tour of Cuba in June. There were visits to a professional ballet school, horse farm, tobacco farm to learn the process of cigar making, art studios, culinary academy ... and whew! one of the local senior centers, which are called "houses of memories." Additionally, dinner one night was at the famous Hotel Nacional de Cuba, built in 1930, where sports and Hollywood personalities "of the day" stayed as guests, including Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire. Another bonus was seeing the 1950s cars, many used as cabs. It was like a step back in time, noted Curry.
