Dancers from In Motion Dance Center in Martinez came away with 25 awards, including the Diamond Award for outstanding hip-hop, at the recent Dupree Dance Competition and Convention in San Francisco, attended by some 20 studios from Northern California.
The group had the largest number of participants with 64 dancers and 16 entries in jazz, hip-hop, tap, contemporary, musical theater and lyrical.
In addition to the Diamond Award, other honors included judge's choice awards for character and creativity; first and second overall in the 4-7 age division; top two of all dances in the 8-11age group; and a fifth overall in the 12-14 age categories, said Deena Roming, dance center director, in a news release.
At the event, dancers were able to take master classes with professionals, who selected some students for dance scholarships through the Dupree program.
Out of the 500 dancers in attendance, only 12 dancers received scholarships, including three In Motion dancers: Lauren Aboussie, Caroline Chouinard and MacKinnley Kirshen.
