Chamber orchestra show at Alhambra High

The Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra will perform with the Alhambra High School String Orchestra at a Friday, May 10, performance at the school, 150 E St., Martinez.

The CCCO, under the direction of Timothy M. Smith, will perform a Maurice Ravel piece with the school orchestra, as well as other works in "The French Connection."

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and youth, available at the door.

Clayton Valley Drama Troupe plans musical

The Clayton Arts Academy advanced Drama Troupe presents the musical comedy, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." The show is based on characters from Charles Schulz's beloved comic strip "Peanuts."

Performances are 7 p.m. May 9, 10, 17; and 3 and 7 p.m. May 18, at Clayton Valley Charter High School, multiuse room, 1101 Alberta Way in Concord.

Varsity Tutors to award $1,000 scholarships

Varsity Tutors has launched a monthly college scholarship contest.

The merit-based program is open to U.S. residents 16 and older and offers the opportunity to win $1,000 toward their college tuition.

To enter, students must submit an essay during the submission period, between the first and 15th of each month.

Valid entries are displayed on the Varsity Tutors website and put to an online public vote via social media from the 16th trough the end of the month.

A panel of judges selects a winner from the five entries that received the most votes. Entries are judged based on clarity of expression, creativity, originality of expression and sincerity, and essay themes center on academic-based topics.

YV Christian to hold Showcase Dinner

The public is invited to Ygnacio Valley Christian School's annual Showcase Dinner on May 9.

The event will be held at 4977 Concord Blvd. in Concord.

Dinner starts at 5:15 p.m. with a music concert, and classrooms will be open starting at 7 p.m. Visitors can meet the staff.

CHS Band Boosters plan fundraiser, raffle

Concord High School Band Boosters present an evening with Grammy Award-winning musician Gordon Goodwin in concert with the Concord High School Jazz Ensemble and the Instrumental Music Program. Also performing are special guests Alex Rackages and Dave Ridge.

The performance will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the Lesher Arts Center, Hofmann Theatre, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek.

Wood Rose Academy accepting applications

Wood Rose Academy, a pre-K-8 school, at 4347 Cowell Road in Concord, is accepting applications for kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year.

Parent program offered at Pixie Play School

Pixie Play School offers a parent and tot program for families with children ages 2-3 from 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesdays, at the school, 1797 Ayers Road in Concord.

Parents will have a parent education session with the staff, joining the teachers to interact with children in a safe environment, providing firsthand experiences with activities and special projects. Through these experiences, children strengthen their self-concept, develop curiosity and increase vocabulary.

A snack will be served during the session.
