Broncos edge Falcons for title

  • In an extremely tight battle for the team title at the Diablo Valley Athletic League track and field championships, the Northgate girls edged College Park 144-141. The Broncos boys team also won the team title. Kendall Stuscavage won titles in the 1,600 and 800 meters to place the second-place Falcons.

    Fast swims at EBAL finals

  • Carondelet High's Chelsea Chenault and Madison White each won a pair of individual races while De La Salle's David Morgan set a meet record in the boys 200 individual medley to highlight the Concord schools' showing at the East Bay Athletic League swimming championships on May 11. Chenault and White also helped set a record in the 200 freestyle relay. Additionally, the Spartans' Sam Protich won the 100 breaststroke.

    Broncos sweep DVAL titles

  • Northgate High swept the team titles at the Diablo Valley Athletic League swimming championships. Highlights included record swims from sophomore Stanley Wu (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and junior Michal Zyla (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly). Sophomore Eric Van Brocklin scorched the competition in the boys 500 freestyle. Natalie Doan, Laura Woods, Rose Seabrook, Daniella Sugijanto and Katie Kronick were standouts on the girls side.

    Acalanes shines in lacrosse

  • The Acalanes High boys and girls lacrosse teams each claimed Diablo Foothill Athletic League titles after finishing the league season unbeaten at 12-0. The Dons' girls team earned the top seed in the North Coast Section Division II playoffs while the boys were rewarded with the No. 2 seed in the Division II bracket.

  • NCS championships, swimming, May 17-18, 10 a.m. -- The two-day meet, with preliminaries on the 17th and finals on the 18th, will be the final high school meet for an outstanding class of seniors across Contra Costa County.

  • NCS Tri-Valley area championships, track and field, May 18, 8:30 a.m. -- The area's best track and field athletes convene at Granada High with hopes of qualifying for next weekend's Meet of Champions.

  • NCS seeding meeting, baseball and softball, May 19, 9 a.m. -- Baseball and softball teams will learn their postseason seeding. Brackets will be available on the NCS website at cifncs.org in the afternoon.

  • Northern California championships, boys golf, May 20, 8 a.m. -- The Diablo Grande Resort in Patterson serves as the site of the NorCal finals.

    Stars of the week

  • Trevor Larnach and Nick Oar, College Park baseball -- Known as the "Aussie Bash Brothers," Larnach and Oar combined to go 9 for 9 in a 20-5 win over El Cerrito on May 11. They combined for nine runs and nine RBI.

  • Roger Blackburn, Concord track and field -- In an unusal triple at the DVAL championships, Blackburn won the 110 hurdles and long jump while taking second in the discus.

  • Sven Campbell and Steven Stumph, Campolindo boys swimming -- The senior stars combined to set four meet records and lead the Cougars to the boys team title at the DFAL championships on May 11. Stumph set records in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, while Campbell set the 50 freestyle standard. They also made up half the record-setting 400 freestyle relay team.

  • Chelsea Chenault and Madison White, Carondelet swimming -- The senior duo each swam to a pair of individual titles in their final EBAL meet on May 11. They also were a part of the record-setting 200 freestyle relay team.

  • Katie Kronick, Northgate girls swimming -- The senior earned individual titles in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, helping the Broncos to the team title at the DVAL championships on May 11.

  • Jackson Miller, Las Lomas boys swimming -- Miller's final DFAL meet included championships and records in the boys 200 and 100 freestyle. He was also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

  • Brittany Usinger, Acalanes girls swimming -- The sophomore claimed individual titles in the girls 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly at the DFAL championships on May 11. Usinger's time of 54.75 in the butterfly was a meet record.
