Memorial Day events are planned in Martinez and Pleasant Hill on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.

  • In Martinez, ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. at the Alhambra Cemetery with a benediction, placing of the wreath and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

    The ceremonies are dedicated "To all those women who gave their lives in service to their country," and will resume at 10 a.m. at the All Veterans Monument at Berrellesa Street and Alhambra Avenue.

    There, messages from Mayor Rob Schroder, a letter from Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, and a Memorial Day message from Lt. Col. Lisa Maloney, 440th Security Forces Squadron Commander, will be presented.

    The national anthem will be performed by Elizabeth Belo-Rex and remembrance offered by Marine Pfc. Jane Baird.

    The ceremonies will conclude with the 21-gun salute by the American Legion Post 29 and VFW Post 1351, with "Taps" by Jennifer Oertel.

    After the ceremony, refreshments will be served at the Veterans Memorial Building, 930 Court St. The community is invited.

  • In Pleasant Hill, the observance will begin at 1 p.m. Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, at the Soldiers Monument, at the corner of Boyd Road and Contra Costa Boulevard.

    The address will be given by Ensign Zachary Dahlke, of the 2013 graduation class of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. His sister, Annie, will perform the national anthem. They are the children of Richard and Corinne Dahlke of Walnut Creek.

    Elected officials schedule to speak include Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of education; state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier; Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla; County Supervisors Karen Mitchoff and Candace Anderson; and Pleasant Hill Mayor Michael Harris.

    Color Guard Naval Sea Cadets will open the program, followed by veteran organization's color bearers. The firing party will be provided by the Military History Preservation Group.

    There will be recorded music throughout the program, and refreshments at the conclusion.
