  • At the Martinez Library, Story Time programs are free.

    Mother Goose Time: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, through Aug. 13. There will be stories and songs, followed by a simple craft time. Best for ages 6 months-3 years old.

    Lego Madness: 3:30-4:30 p.m. July 23. Kids can design their own creations with the library's Lego blocks.

    Summer Pajama Party: Reading Is Soooo Delicious! 6:30-7:30 p.m. July 29. Kids can come in their jammies to hear stories and make crafts. Participants will learn about Peter Rabbit's travels in Scotland, and his adventure with the giant radish. They will also discover the secret of bunny cakes. Treats will be served.

    Sci-Fi Sundaes: 1-3 p.m. July 20. Teens and middle school students can build and eat ice cream sundaes while talking about their favorite science fiction or fantasy books with other teens and playing board games. Register by July 20.

    Saturday Needle Art: 1-3:30 p.m. July 27, Aug. 10, 24. Kids and adults can get hands-on knitting and crochet instruction from Marilyn Scovell. Participants can drop in anytime during the session to work on current projects, knit with friends or learn a new hobby.

    Knit and Crochet Classes: 6-7:30 p.m. July 23, 30 and Aug. 6, 12. Kids and teens can learn the about knitting and crochet and a six-week workshop sponsored by the Helping Hands Foundation and the National Needle Arts Association. Adults 18 and older are welcome, but supplied materials may be limited. Registration is required.

    Summer Reading Finale: Rockets! 6:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 12. Kids and preschoolers can make air-powered rockets and watch them fly. To mark the close of the Summer Reading Festival, there will be a drawing for a free Lindsay Wildlife pass.

    Author Dr. Ken Tye talks about Port Chicago: 3:30-4:30 p.m. July 26. Author Ken Tye discusses his book, "At the Point of the Bay," which looks at the Port Chicago area, beginning with the Chupcan Indians through the explosion in 1944 and subsequent closing and destruction of the town. There will be books for purchase and signing.

    Afternoon Storytime: 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays. There are songs, rhymes, bounces and simple stories to introduce children ages 0-3 to literacy.

    Preschool Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Thursdays, features stories and songs for preschoolers and toddlers, ages 3-5.

    Saturday Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Saturdays, for babies, preschoolers and kids. There will be stories and songs.

    World Party -- A Multiethnic Extravaganza: 2-4 p.m. July 20. Kids, teens and all ages are invited to celebrate world cultures through dance, music, crafts, snacks and games. There will be activities from India, Mexico, Japan, Afghanistan and Spain.

    Fur Scales & Tails: 6:30-7:30 p.m. July 30. Kids ages 5-11 can see and touch more than 17 different animals, including hamsters, snakes, lizards, tarantulas, chickens, hairless rats and more.

    Mr. Horsefeathers: 6:30-7:10 p.m. Aug. 13. Kids are invited to the magic, comedy and juggling of Mr. Horsefeathers aka Steve Koehler.

    "Koran by Heart" Film at the Pleasant Hill Senior Center: 1-3 p.m. July 23. The library and senior center host "Koran by Heart," part two of three in the Muslim Journeys film series. The screening will be at the senior center, 233 Gregory Lane.

    Pleasant Hill Library Book Discussion: 6:30 p.m. in Room A. On Aug. 20, the discussion is on "To the Light House," by Virginia Woolf.

    Afternoon Book Discussion: 1-2:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Adults can read with others at the library and discuss "San Miguel," by T.C. Boyle.
