  • At the Martinez Library, Story Time programs are free.

    Mother Goose Time: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 10-Nov. 19. There will be stories and songs, followed by a simple craft time. Best for ages 6 months-3 years old.

    Wii Wednesdays: 2:30-4 p.m. Sept. 4. Middle school students and teens can join their friends for Wii games and snacks.

    College Planning Program: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 9. High school and junior high school students and their parents can learn from the nonprofit Heartland Institute of Financial Education how to best position themselves to qualify for grants, scholarships and student loans. Presenter is Irving Joe; register by 5 p.m. Sept. 9.

    Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Fridays features songs, rhymes, bounces and simple stories. Best for ages 0-3, but all are welcome.

    Afternoon Storytime: 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays. There will be songs, rhymes, bounces and simple stories to introduce children ages 0-3 to literacy.

    Preschool Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Thursdays, features stories and songs for preschoolers and toddlers, ages 3-5.

    Saturday Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Saturdays, for babies, preschoolers and kids. There will be stories, songs and more.

    Lego Creators Club: 2-3 p.m. Saturdays. Kids ages 5-11 can let their imaginations run wild at the weekly get-together. There will be new themes, tips and challenges, plus book tie-ins to take home.

    Craft With Recycled Materials: 3-5 p.m. Sept. 18. Kids and teens can make art from recycled materials. Supplies will be provided, but participants can bring their own recyclables. Crafts will be donated to the Pleasant Hill Art, Jazz and Wine Festival to raise funds for Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library.

    Pleasant Hill Teen Advisory Group (TAG): 3:30-5 p.m. Sept. 11. Teens ages 13-18 can meet other teens and the young adult librarian every second Wednesday of the month in Room A to create fun programs and suggest new resources. Participants can receive volunteer hours for their time.

    Teen Chess and Board Games: 3-5 p.m. Fridays. Students 12-17 can get instruction and participate in friendly matches and tournaments. Participants can bring their own boards or games.

    Your Library, Your Future! A Pleasant Hill Library Town Hall Meeting: 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 11. Residents are invited to share and discuss ideas about the future of the library, and are encouraged to bring a guest who doesn't currently use the library. Supervisor Karen Mitchoff is scheduled to attend.

    Contra Costa County Library Book Giveaway: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Aug. 31. Used books are available to the public for free at the library administration shipping area, 75 Santa Barbara Road, Pleasant Hill. Books are sorted into children and adult titles, fiction and nonfiction. Bring your own bags or boxes.

    Pleasant Hill Library Book Discussion: 6:30 p.m. in Room A. On Sept. 17, the discussion is on "In Defense of Food," by Michael Pollan.

    Afternoon Book Discussion: 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 6. Adults can read with others at the library and discuss "West with the Night," by Beryl Markham

    English Conversation Practice for Adults: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Adults can practice speaking and listening to English in a casual group run by the library staff and volunteers.

    Volunteer Orientation: 3-4 p.m. Sept. 7, 21. Teens and adults can learn to be a library volunteer during a tour the branch with a staff member.

    Las Juntas Artists Association: In partnership with the library, each month the group exhibits the works of different artists during regular library hours. In August, the watercolor and acrylic paintings of June Vega will be on display.
