Spartans survive scare on road

  • The De La Salle High football team survived a close call against Serra-San Mateo on Sept. 7, rallying for a come-from-behind 21-14 win. Quarterback Chris Williams scored the tying and winning touchdowns on 1-yard sneaks in the fourth quarter. Safety John Quinn set up the winning drive with an interception with about four minutes remaining.

    Carondelet takes second at tournament

  • The Carondelet High girls volleyball team reached the Gold Division finals of the Deer Valley Tournament on Sept. 7 before losing to Monte Vista. In the 25-22, 25-21 championship match loss to the Mustangs, Michelle Seals had 14 assists. The Cougars defeated Campolindo 25-21, 25-22 in the semifinals.

    Broncos win thriller over San Marin

  • Kyle Austin threw for 265 yards, including a slant pass to Jake Smith that went for a 75-yard score with 10 seconds left, as the Northgate High football team stunned visiting San Marin 45-42 on Sept. 6. Eric Haynes added 133 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Broncos (2-0). Northgate survived after San Marin scored a go-ahead touchdown with 31 seconds left.

    Defense leads Acalanes to victory

  • The Acalanes High football team rode its defense to a 13-7 win over Castro Valley, a Division I opponent, on Sept. 6. Peter Mitchell ran for 127 yards and a touchdown while Jared Finney added a 3-yard scoring run. But it was really the Dons' defense that shined. A week earlier, Castro Valley had scored 57 points against Monte Vista.

  • Las Lomas at Foothill, football, Sept. 13, 7 p.m. -- The Knights are off to a 2-0 start, but will face their toughest opponent yet in the Falcons, who are also 2-0.

  • Miramonte at Analy, football, Sept. 13, 7 p.m. -- Miramonte has played some barnburners with the Tigers over the years, and this year's edition could be just as thrilling.

  • De La Salle at St. Mary's-Stockton, football, Sept. 13, 7:15 p.m. -- De La Salle will be without two key players, RB/S Dasmond Tautalatasi and WR Adam Mayer, who were injured in last week's win at Serra. It's possible that the Rams, who only lost 21-13 last year at Owen Owens Field, could give the Spartans some trouble in the ESPNU televised game.

  • Ed Sias Invitational, cross country, Sept. 14, 10:40 a.m. -- The annual race will be held at Hidden Lakes Park in Martinez due to construction on the normal course. Varsity boys races begin at 10:40 a.m. and varsity girls kick off at 11:30 a.m.

    Stars of the week

  • Ray Jackson, College Park football -- The sophomore had rushing touchdowns of 18 and 23 yards as the Falcons earned a 21-10 win over Dougherty Valley on Sept. 6.

  • Molly Woerner, Alhambra girls water polo -- Woerner contributed four goals and two assists as the Bulldogs edged Amador Valley 10-9 in nonleague action on Sept. 5.

  • Drew Anderson, Miramonte football -- The Matadors' quarterback threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns while completing 18 of 30 passes in a 36-13 win over St. Mary's-Berkeley on Sept. 6.

  • Chloe Hansel, Las Lomas girls cross country -- Hansel, competing in the sophomore girls race, posted the fastest time of the day in any girls race at the Monte Vista Invitational on Sept. 4. Hansel's time was 12:26.47 on the two-mile course.

  • Eric Haynes, Northgate football -- The senior rushed for 133 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries to help the Broncos edge visiting San Marin 45-42 on Sept. 6.

  • Darneail Jenkins, Mt. Diablo football -- Jenkins accounted for all of the Red Devils' touchdowns in a 32-21 loss to Mt. Diablo on Sept. 6. He threw a 50-yard touchdown pass while adding rushing scores of 67 and 6 yards.

  • Elizabeth Schultz, Acalanes girls golf -- Schultz's 2013 season is off to a fine start. The Dons star shot a 1-over 37 at the Rossmoor Golf Club to lead Acalanes to a 227-294 DFAL win over Las Lomas on Sept. 6.
