People took their tools in hand and fanned out across Pleasant Hill to participate in the city's annual Community Service Day. The Sept. 28 event brought Werner Gehrke, above, out to the Bike Build-A-Thon, where bicycles are repaired for distribution to needy children. Eri Inaba, 20, of Pleasant Hill, left, paints cubbyholes for a kindergarten class at Fair Oaks Elementary School, while Carsyn Poole, 14, helps clean away unwanted plants at an apartment complex on Lisa Lane.

The day started with a free pancake breakfast by the Lions Club at Pleasant Hill Park, where the first 600 participants also received free event T-shirts.
