Vikings hit win column

  • The Diablo Valley College football team earned its first victory of the season on Oct. 4, beating Merced 47-18 at home. Quarterback Adam Wood threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, helping the Vikings build a 40-0 lead by halftime. Wood completed 28 of 38 passes for 422 yards and was the team's leading rusher with 53 yards on eight carries. Ethan Montalvo caught six passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

    Minutemen starting to surge

  • The Concord High football team will begin Diablo Valley Athletic League play on a positive note with three straight victories and a 4-1 overall record. The Minutemen most recently crushed Oakland High 64-0 on Oct. 4 with quarterback Mitch Daniels throwing for 211 yards and six touchdowns. Jed Gwynn, Mason Knight and Ronnie Algood hauled in two touchdown receptions each.

    Knights sweep Dons in pool

  • Las Lomas High's water polo teams swept Acalanes in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League openers on Oct. 2. Sam Toriggino and David Kessler combined for five goals in the boys' 8-6 win. Spencer Creed stopped 13 shots in goal for Las Lomas. The Knights' girls team also won 8-6 with Kim Johnson, Sarah Ward and Maddie Ward scoring two goals each in the victory.

    Cougars soar in volleyball

  • The Campolindo High girls volleyball team continued to roll in Diablo Foothill Athletic League play, beating Dougherty Valley and Acalanes during the first week of October to improve to 4-0 against league competition. Kelley Wirth had a team-high 12 kills in a three-set win over Acalanes on Oct. 3 and nine against Dougherty Valley on Oct. 1. The Cougars have dropped just one set in four DFAL matches.

  • Clayton Valley at College Park, football, Oct. 11, 3:30 p.m. -- The defending DVAL champions will play their toughest opponent in weeks as they open the league season with an afternoon game at College Park.

  • Alhambra at Dougherty Valley, football, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. -- It's been a challenging season for Alhambra, but the Bulldogs have had two weeks to prepare for a much-improved Dougherty Valley squad.

  • Acalanes at Miramonte, football, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. -- The two Lamorinda programs will look to rebound from DFAL defeats the previous week. QB Casey Harrington had a big game for Acalanes with 282 passing yards against Las Lomas in a losing effort.

  • DFAL tournament, girls golf, Oct. 14, 8 a.m. -- The league champion and North Coast Section qualifiers will be decided at the Diablo Creek Golf Course.

  • Colin Chiapello, De La Salle water polo -- Chiapello scored five goals as the Spartans improved to 3-0 in EBAL play with a 16-7 win over Monte Vista on Oct. 3.

  • Mitch Daniels, Concord football -- The junior quarterback threw six touchdown passes, completing 11 of 21 attempts for 211 yards in a 64-0 drubbing of Oakland High on Oct. 4.

  • Samantha David, Berean Christian girls volleyball -- David's 18 kills and 16 digs helped the Eagles beat College Park in four games on Oct. 2.

  • Nick Fadelli, Campolindo football -- The junior running back rushed for 217 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown, in the Cougars' 38-10 victory over Miramonte on Oct. 4. Campolindo is unbeaten at 6-0.

  • Zack Fulks, Las Lomas football -- Fulks, a senior running back, rushed for 172 yards on 22 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter of the Knights' 33-26 comeback victory over Acalanes on Oct. 4.

  • Annika Jensen, Campolindo girls water polo -- The senior scored three goals in the Cougars' 10-8 win over Miramonte on Oct. 2, then added a team-high three more scores and two assists in a 11-10 loss to San Ramon Valley in a battle between the East Bay's top two teams on Oct. 4.

  • Elizabeth Schultz, Acalanes girls golf -- Schultz was under par twice in DFAL matches. She shot a 3-under 33 against Alhambra at Franklin Canyon Golf Course on Oct. 2 and a 1-under 36 at the San Ramon Golf Course to following day in a tri-match with Dougherty Valley and Dublin.
