Construction work is underway on the 1.7-mile section of Carquinez Scenic Drive between Martinez and Port Costa. The two-year $5.6 million reconstruction project includes stabilizing embankments, installing drainage systems and overall repairs. With federal, state, county and East Bay Regional Park District funds, the road is being converted to a bicycle and pedestrian trail, though hikers and cyclists have been using it informally since it was closed in the 1980s. Reopening is expected in fall 2014, and when completed, the trail will become part of the planned 500-mile San Francisco Bay Trail, which could eventually encircle the bay.
