Viking fall short in East Bay Bowl

  • The Diablo Valley College football team fell short in the East Bay Bowl, losing to Laney 29-14 on Nov. 23. Laney bolted out to a 29-0 lead in the second quarter and held on for the win. Facing constant pressure, Vikings QB Niko Fortino passed for 159 yards and a touchdown in the loss. DVC finishes the season 5-6 overall.

    Carondelet falls in NCS final

  • Carondelet High's girls volleyball team advanced to the North Coast Section Division II championship match, but couldn't overcome No. 1 seeded Redwood in a 28-26, 25-13, 25-21 loss on Nov. 23. The Cougars reached the final as the No. 3 seed after scoring a five-set road victory over No. 2 Maria Carrillo-Santa Rosa on Nov. 20.

    Football ends in Walnut Creek

  • The Northgate and Las Lomas football teams saw their seasons come to an end in the North Coast Section Division II quarterfinals. Both Walnut Creek squads went up against high-powered offenses and couldn't keep up. Las Lomas struggled with No. 2 Clayton Valley Charter in a 59-13 loss while Northgate couldn't slow Miramonte in a 66-48 defeat, despite 372 rushing yards and five touchdowns from Eric Haynes.

    Cougars race to victory

  • Campolindo High swept the boys and girls titles in Division III at the North Coast Section cross country championships at Hayward High on Nov. 23. Aidan Goltra broke a Division III record with his first-place finish of 14:44 in the boys race. Brighie Leach won the girls Division III race, while Mary Orders and Rachel Johnson also placed in the top four in a dominant effort by the Cougars.

  • Deer Valley at De La Salle, football, Nov. 29, 7 p.m. -- Can dynamic QB Nsimba Webster and the Wolverines find any success against a DLS defense that hasn't given up a single point in its last two games?

  • El Cerrito at Campolindo, football, Nov. 29, 7 p.m. -- Whoever wins this highly-anticipated rematch will move on to the NCS Division III championship game. The Cougars beat the Gauchos 42-27 in a Sept. 20 nonleague contest.

  • Miramonte at Clayton Valley Charter, football, Nov. 29, 7 p.m. -- Expect a lot of points in this NCS Division II semifinal. The Matadors have an excellent passing attack led by QB Drew Anderson while Miles Harrison and the Eagles do their damage on the ground.

  • CIF state championships, cross country, Nov. 30, 8:30 a.m. -- Fresno's Woodward Park is the site of the state meet once again. Campolindo's Aidan Goltra will try to defend his state championship in Division III while De La Salle's Blair Hurlock is coming off a record-setting performance at the NCS meet.

    Stars of the week

  • Drew Anderson, Miramonte football -- The senior quarterback was brilliant in leading the Matadors to a 66-48 victory over Northgate on Nov. 23 in the NCS Division II quarterfinals. Anderson was 20 of 33 for 358 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

  • Miles Harrison, Clayton Valley Charter football -- The junior running back carried the ball 17 times for 305 yards in a 59-13 win over Las Lomas in the North Coast Section Division II quarterfinals on Nov. 22.

  • Eric Haynes, Northgate football -- The Broncos lost to Miramonte 66-48 in the NCS Division II quarterfinals Nov. 23 despite a career game from Haynes. The senior rushed 40 times for 372 yards and five touchdowns in his final high school game.

  • Blair Hurlock, De La Salle cross country -- With the fastest time ever on the much-used Hayward High course, Hurlock won the Division I boys race at the NCS championships Nov. 23. He finished the 3.0-mile course in 14:30, which was four seconds better than the previous record.

  • Elizabeth Schultz, Acalanes girls golf -- The senior tied for second at the CIF state championships on Nov. 20 by shooting an even par 71 at Quail Lodge Golf Course in Carmel. She had three birdies to help her finish in a five-way tie for second place.

  • John Velsaco, De La Salle football -- The Spartans' running back tallied 145 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries in De La Salle's 46-0 rout over Granada in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on Nov. 22.

  • Kelley Wirth, Campolindo girls volleyball -- The junior outside hitter tallied 26 kills in the NCS Division III championship match against Bishop O'Dowd, but the Cougars ended up losing a thriller 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 26-28, 20-18.
