Niels Allen Sorensen, the son of Jens and Patricia Sorensen, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, which will be presented in Court of Honor ceremonies May 18, at Hope Center Covenant Church, in Pleasant Hill.

He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 277, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Don Hinton.

For his Eagle Scout community service project, Sorensen, along with 29 volunteers, built 12 barn owl boxes that were placed in areas where nesting habitats have been lost.

He installed one box at Palmer School in Walnut Creek, and the other boxes were donated to Native Bird Connections in Martinez. It took 165.5 hours to complete his project.

During his Scouting career, Sorensen attended the National Scout Jamboree in 2010, the World Scout Jamboree in 2011, and Philmont Scout Ranch in 2013.

He also hiked 626 miles and camped 141 nights, and completed 148 hours of service.

Sorensen, 17, is a junior at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, and is a resident of Pleasant Hill.
