Bulldogs fall in NCS baseball final

  • A great run through the North Coast Section Division III baseball tournament for Alhambra High ended with a 3-1 loss to Tamalpais in the championship game on May 31. The Bulldogs, the tournament's No. 3 seed, beat Novato, Kennedy-Fremont and Eureka to reach the title game. Alhambra got strong games from Leo Costa (3 for 3 with a double and run) and Zach Keever, but couldn't overcome three first inning runs by Tamalpais.

    Cougars reach NCS softball final

  • The Carondelet High softball team's season ended with an appearance in the North Coast Section Division II title game. After blanking Arroyo 5-0 in the May 28 semifinals, the Cougars struggled to score in a 5-0 loss to Alhambra in the May 30 championship game held at Saint Mary's College. Though Carondelet threatened in every inning and had 14 baserunners, a big hit eluded them. Sierra Blair walked three times while Olivia Haney was 1 for 2 with a double in the loss. The Cougars finished the year with a 15-12 record.

    Broncos fall in NorCal

  • Northgate High's boys volleyball team earned a spot in the Northern California Division II regional tournament, but was eliminated in the first round by Sir Francis Drake-San Anselmo. The Broncos lost a tough four-game match 25-23, 16-25, 28-26, 25-19 to finish the season with a stellar 29-5 record. Sam Spoden had 10 kills and two blocks in the loss.

  • CIF state championships, track and field, June 6-7 -- The high school athletic year will come to a close for East Bay athletes at the state track and field meet at Clovis' Veterans Memorial Stadium. Finals in field events begin at 4:30 p.m. on June 7 with running events slated to begin at 6 p.m.

    Stars of the week

  • Joe DeMers, College Park baseball -- DeMers was the winning pitcher and hit a two-run home run as the Falcons beat Marin Catholic-Kentfield 7-2 in the NCS Division II championship game on May 31. The junior also starred in a 9-0 win over Montgomery in the semifinals, driving in two runs.

  • Cara DiMercurio, Alhambra softball -- The sophomore outfielder went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer and RBI single to help the Bulldogs capture the NCS Division II championship with a 5-0 win over Carondelet on May 30.

  • Anaya Alexander, Las Lomas track and field -- Alexander won the girls 400 meters at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions with a time of 56.35 seconds. As a top three finisher, the sophomore qualified for this weekend's CIF state championships in Clovis.

  • Arden Creson, Miramonte track and field -- The freshman made a mark in her first NCS Meet of Champions, winning the girls long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 2 inches at Cal's Edwards Stadium on May 31.

  • Austin Dondanville, De La Salle baseball -- The senior pitched a two-hit shutout in the semifinals, then came through at the plate as the Spartans captured the North Coast Section Division I baseball title. Dondanville went 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI in De La Salle's 6-2 win over San Ramon Valley in the final.

  • Marquis Morris, De La Salle track and field -- The USC-bound senior won both hurdles events at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions on May 31. Morris won the 110 high hurdles in 13.96 seconds and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 37.36.

  • Matt Thomas, Acalanes track and field -- Thomas excelled in the throws at the NCS Meet of Champions, winning both the shot put and discus.
