PLEASANTON -- Cats and dogs can be adopted for no fees Saturday and Sunday at the Valley Humane Society shelter, 3670 Nevada St. as part of an annual adoption event underwritten by the Maddie Fund.

Valley Humane Society will be open for adoptions from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Potential adopters are encouraged to visit Valley Humane in advance to fill out paperwork and have adoption applications preapproved. The society will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday but closed on Friday.

The Maddie Fund is compensating shelters in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties this weekend for pet adoptions in hopes of getting 3,000 dogs and cats adopted.
