Dons rally, floor Mats

  • The Amador Valley High football team rallied from a 28-7 deficit, outscoring the Granada Matadors 20-0 in the fourth quarter, to earn a 34-28 East Bay Athletic League win on Oct. 19. The Dons (4-4, 2-2) moved into a tie for fourth place with rival Foothill, which fell 31-21 to visiting San Ramon Valley. Kyle Moreno passed for 258 yards -- 191 of which in the second half -- and two touchdowns. Alejandro Apodaca's 5-yard touchdown run completed the comeback. Casey Soltis led the Matadors with 90 yards rushing and a touchdown.

    Dublin wins thriller

  • Andrew Totaro kicked the go-ahead field, and Dublin High defeated host Acalanes 17-14 on Oct. 19 in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League. The Gaels' Darrell Millinder ran for 66 yards on 10 carries, and Josh Nobida was 10 for 15 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Totaro's 25-yard field goal with 4:10 left in the game broke a 14-14 tie. Dublin (5-2, 3-2) staved off Acalanes' desperation drive to clinch the win.

    Valley Christian rides Wikle train

  • Howard Wikle ran for 194 yards on 14 carries and five touchdowns, as Valley Christian High rallied from a 14-0 deficit to wallop Berean Christian on Oct. 19 in the Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division. The Vikings (6-2, 2-2) have two in a row in their debut season in the TCAL.

    Wolves upend Falcons

  • Led by quarterback Cameron Birse, running back Marcus de la Pena and receiver JJ Koski, San Ramon Valley High beat host Foothill 31-21 on Oct. 19 in an EBAL showdown. The Wolves (4-4, 4-1), who have won four of their last five, are tied for first place in the league standings with California. Monte Vista is a half-game back at 3-1. The Falcons got solid efforts from linebacker Cody Shields and two-way force Ray Hudson, who also boomed long punts. San Ramon Valley clinched the game on a Justin Bangay touchdown reception, followed by a Bangay interception.

  • Amador Valley at Monte Vista, football, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. -- The Mustangs (6-2, 3-1) look to rebound from loss to De La Salle against the scrappy Dons.

  • North Coast Section Division I Tournament of Champions, golf, Oct. 29, 8 a.m.. -- EBAL tournament champion Amador Valley will seek a third consecutive team TOC title at Windsor Golf Course. The Dons are led by EBAL medalist Kimberly Liu, who shot a 4-under 67 at the league tournament at Deer Ridge Golf Club in Brentwood.

  • Louie Hernandez, Livermore football -- Hernandez ran for 110 yards in a loss to California.

  • Grant Miller, Amador Valley football -- Miller, one of quarterback Kyle Moreno's go-to targets, had 111 yards receiving in a come-from-behind 34-28 win over Granada on Oct. 19.

  • Cody Shields, Foothill football -- Shields, a linebacker, gave an inspired effort in the Falcons' loss against San Ramon Valley, including returning an interception 20 yards for a touchdown.

  • Howard Wikle, Valley Christian football -- Wikle had five touchdown runs and 195 yards on 14 carries in a 53-14 come-from-behind blowout of Berean Christian on Oct. 19.

  • C.J. Cornwell, California football -- Cornwell had 123 yards rushing and 101 yards receiving in the Grizzlies' 56-28 win over Livermore on Oct. 19.

  • Kaitlyn Haithcock, Monte Vista tennis -- Haithcock took tough three-set win over Niki Mohebi, helping the Mustangs beat Amador Valley 7-2 on Oct. 18 to remain unbeaten in the EBAL.

  • John De Maio, Monte Vista football -- De Maio booted three field goals in the Mustangs' loss to unbeaten De La Salle on Oct. 19.

  • Kat Klass, San Ramon Valley water polo -- Klass scored 10 goals in the Wolves' 14-3 nonleague win over Northgate on Oct. 19.
