Dons, Grizzlies triumph in NCS

  • The Amador Valley and California high school football teams earned victories in the North Coast Section Division I quarterfinals last week. In all-East Bay Athletic League battles, the No. 5-seeded Dons bested No. 4 San Ramon Valley 28-25 on Nov. 17, one day after No. 2 California, fresh off a first-round bye, beat No. 7 Foothill 36-6.

    California volleyball makes history

  • The California High volleyball team earned its first NCS title since 1982 with a 23-25, 25-15, 25-6, 25-19 win over San Ramon Valley in the Division I final on Nov. 17. Sabrina Clayton had 29 kills and 11 digs for the Grizzlies. Caitlyn Quingoy had 38 assists. Emily Reder had 19 kills, seven digs, three aces and three blocks to pace the Wolves. California and San Ramon Valley advanced to the Northern California playoffs, which began Nov. 20.

    Dublin falls in section quarterfinals

  • The Dublin High football team couldn't stop Clayton Valley Charter's explosive running game in a 47-7 loss in the NCS Division II quarterfinals on Nov. 16. Dublin star Ondre Rudolph returned from an ankle injury to gain 75 yards on 14 carries. The Gaels' Cory Thurman had a 10-yard touchdown reception from Josh Nobida and finished with 81 yards on six receptions.

    Las Positas drops consolation final

  • Amador Valley High graduate Jacob Contreras, a freshman guard, scored 11 points in Las Positas College's 71-67 loss against Butte in the consolation final of the Ed Boyle Classic in Ukiah on Nov. 17. The Hawks' B.T. Shabazz had a season-high 27 points against Butte.

  • Amador Valley at De La Salle, NCS football, Nov. 23, 7 p.m. -- The Dons (8-4), who have won five in a row, will face the unbeaten Spartans (11-0) in the Division I semifinals. De La Salle beat Amador Valley 52-24 on Oct. 12 in Pleasanton.

  • James Logan at California, NCS football, Nov. 24, 7 p.m. -- The No. 2 seeded Grizzlies (9-2), the EBAL co-champions, will host the third-seeded Colts (11-1) in an attractive Division I semifinal.

  • CIF championships, cross country, Nov. 24, 8:30 a.m. -- The state's top runners will meet in a day of racing at the 5,000-meter Woodward Park course in Fresno. Races will be in five boys and girls divisions, based on school size.

  • Megan McCandless, Granada cross country -- McCandless led the Matadors to the Division I team championship at the NCS meet with a fourth-place individual finish.

  • Jena Pianin, Amador Valley cross country -- Pianin overcame a tough field in a driving rainstorm to repeat as NCS Division I girls champion at Hayward High on Nov. 17.

  • Sabrina Clayton, California girls volleyball -- Clayton had 29 kills and 11 digs to lead the Grizzlies past San Ramon Valley in the NCS Division I championship on Nov. 17.

  • Quinn Kaehler, Diablo Valley football -- Kaehler, a California High graduate, completed a brilliant career at DVC by passing for 340 yards and rushing for 67 in a East Bay Bowl win over Laney on Nov. 16.

  • Kyle Kragen, Diablo Valley football -- Kragen, who had two sacks, and his former San Ramon Valley high teammate Kyle Egan were dominant on defense against Laney in the East Bay Bowl.
