SAN JOSE -- The City Council voted unanimously in closed session Tuesday to appoint Toni Taber as acting city clerk starting Monday.
City Clerk Dennis Hawkins last month said he will resign from the job he has held nearly two years to take a job starting Monday as administrative services manager for the Santa Clara County Office of the County Counsel.
The City Council on Tuesday commended Hawkins, who has worked 18 years for San Jose starting in the parks and recreation department.
Hawkins hired Taber, 41, as assistant city clerk in October 2011. She had served as a municipal clerk for the cities of Corona and Covina and worked with the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution District. Taber received bachelor's and master's degrees in English from California State University Sacramento.
