Dr. Shilpa Mehta does a dental screening on Overfelt H.S. student Cecilia Sandoval, 17, at Mount Pleasant H.S. in San Jose Friday, March 29, 2013. Dental disease is a silent epidemic affecting California students -- especially low-income students. Several schools are working to combat the problem by partnering with health organizations to offer on-campus dental care for their students. At Mount Pleasant H.S. in San Jose, a nonprofit group offers dental screenings for students and has recently partnered with the campus to build a new, full-service dental clinic that will open in the next few months to offer even more expanded care.
