Raiders senior executive John Herrera spoke with managing general partner Al Davis on Tuesday, and, naturally, the subject of the team's search for a head coach came about.
New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh. Raiders advance scout Paul Hackett. Former Raiders offensive coordinator Marc Trestman. Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson.
One by one, the names bandied about in recent days were broached. Each time, Davis dismissed any and all reports linking the aforementioned names to the Raiders coaching vacancy.
"None of the reports is true," Herrera said. "Every one is false and unfounded. They're just throwing pie against the wall."
Just the same, Herrera said, Davis is intent upon deciding sooner rather than later whether to give the job to Tom Cable on a permanent basis or someone else.
"Mr. Davis would like to move on it fairly quick," Herrera said. "But that doesn't mean we need to do it tonight or by New Year's Eve. The season just ended."
Cable replaced the fired Lane Kiffin after four games this season and did an admirable job piecing together a messy situation. The Raiders finished the season with back-to-back victories and at 5-11 matched their best record since 2002.
However, Davis hasn't assured Cable anything other than consideration for the job.
Harbaugh is believed to be a potential candidate based on his history with the Raiders, as well as the success enjoyed by his brother, John, with the Ravens this season.
Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby said in an e-mail Tuesday that, "Jim has agreed to terms on a contract extension which will put him under contract with Stanford for six more years. The Raiders have not contacted me, Jim or his agent."
Two people familiar with the hiring process said Atlanta Falcons wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie has a decent shot at getting the job, though he hasn't been contacted by the Raiders yet.
Robiskie, 54, played for the Raiders from 1977-79 and was an assistant coach with the Raiders from 1982-93.
