The Raiders' search for corporate sponsorship has led them to ... Asia?
Apparently they've scoured the earth to find ways to get an airplane decked out in Raiders garb.
They've teamed with AirAsia, which is touted as the "largest low-fare airline in Asia." Insert your joke about how low the once-large Raiders have fallen in the NFL.
The Raiders' Web site offers pictures of an airliner — named "Xcellence," surely in honor of Phil Jackson's 10th NBA title — that is decorated with the Raiders shield, an eye patch (on the plane's nose, not a cockpit window thankfully) and images of a few Raiderettes and three Raiders players. Who are those players? You tell me. They're in Nos. 1, 6 and 30 jerseys.
The Raiders sent a few representatives — including Ted Hendricks, Cliff Branch, Rod Martin and Mark Davis, Al's son — to Asia to commemorate their new partner. No word on whether Kuala Lumpur has any enticing stadium sites for the Raiders, we say half-jokingly.
AirAsia doesn't fly to the United States, saving all that air space for JaMarcus Russell passes, apparently. The airline is hosting a Web-based contest in which 1,000 seats will be given away to students for Raiders home games. Students in Asia? Students in the Bay Area?
All joking aside, the Raiders deserve kudos for taking an aggressive approach to expanding their image globally. One other example of them doing so is how their Web site comes in six languages: Tagalog, Japanese, German, Chinese, Spanish and English (their version of English, not Lane Kiffin's).
