Running back Michael Bush participated in practice Monday, a week after surgery on his broken left thumb.

Bush suffered a Bennett fracture against the 49ers on Aug. 28. As a result, he is wearing a brace that wraps around his wrist and keeps his thumb from moving.

At one point, Bush ran a pass route and caught the ball with both hands. That bodes well for his playing against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday in Oakland's regular-season opener.

"He did some individual work, caught the ball, ran some routes, carried it a little bit," coach Tom Cable said. "Limited."

It's uncertain whether Bush will be healthy enough to play Sunday. His status will be updated Wednesday.

  • Rookie linebacker Travis Goethel rejoined the Raiders after being absent for most of the past week. He declined to comment on his whereabouts or the reason behind his mystery hiatus.

"I don't know if I can actually say anything about that yet," Goethel said.

As to whether he will be able to play Sunday, if needed, Goethel said: "I don't think I should say anything."

Cable said he will address Goethel's situation Wednesday.

  • The Houston Texans signed linebacker David Nixon to their 53-man roster soon after he was cut by the Raiders on Saturday. Nixon ostensibly was signed as an insurance policy for the four games that Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Cushing is suspended.

  • The Raiders signed tight end Kevin Brock to their practice squad. He was with the Dallas Cowboys in training camp this year. He also spent time on the practice squads of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears the past two seasons.

The Raiders have only two tight ends on their 53-man roster -- Zach Miller and Brandon Myers.

  • The Raiders were one of two teams being considered by wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, according to a Seattle Times report. Ultimately, Houshmandzadeh signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

  • Goethel, receiver Chaz Schilens (knee) and cornerback Walter McFadden (undisclosed injury) were the only players absent from practice. Defensive tackle Desmond Bryant (elbow) returned after missing the past two days.
