GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A man attending the Oakland Raiders preseason football game against the Arizona Cardinals was shot in the face during an altercation in a parking lot Friday, and the suspect claims it was an accident.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, is expected to survive, said Glendale police officer Tracey Breeden. Police cannot confirm if the two men attended the game, but Breeden said: "It appears to be a fan-based incident."

Officers responded to a 9:30 p.m. call from a man who claimed he had "accidently shot" another man in a parking lot near a Hampton Inn just north of the University of Phoenix Stadium. The shooting took place during the second half of the preseason game, Breeden

When officers arrived the caller was still at the scene. The caller was taken into custody and the victim was transported to a local hospital.

As of Saturday morning, the victim was in stable condition, Breeden said.

An investigation revealed that the men, both Arizona residents, got into a verbal fight, which led to the shooting, Breeden said. A television station reported the man shot was 30.

"The incident occurred approximately one hour before the conclusion of the Arizona Cardinals game, so there were very few people in the parking lot at the time of the shooting," Breeden said. "No other parties or individuals near the area sustained any injuries as a result of this incident."

As of Saturday morning

Police have not released the identity of the shooter nor the victim and said charges are pending against both men.

Authorities are also not releasing the motive for the shooting.
