ALAMEDA -- Nick Guess won what amounted to a snap-off Wednesday morning, was signed to the practice squad and will perform long-snapping duties against the Miami Dolphins if Jon Condo is not cleared by doctors to play.

Guess, a rookie from Tennessee, heard about Condo's concussion and watched the game on his DVR on Tuesday morning.

"I was thinking about getting a call, because the Redskins snapper (Nick Sundberg) broke his arm and then this happened to Jon,'' Guess said.

Guess said the Raiders called Tuesday at 3 p.m., he was on a plane by 6 p.m., arrived in Oakland at 10 p.m., was in his room at 11 p.m. and on the field with five other prospective long-snappers the next morning at 7 a.m.

The others trying out were Bryce Davis of Central Oklahoma, Kyle Nelson of New Mexico State, Ryan Pontbriand of Rice, Travis Tripucka of Massachusetts and Ryan Senser of Idaho.

Guess said he learned long-snapping at age 10 from his father, who was also a long-snapper. He went to OTAs and training camp with the San Diego Chargers this year, losing out to veteran Mike Windt, and was released Aug. 27.

Coach Dennis Allen said it's conceivable the Raiders might not know until Saturday if Condo is available to face Miami.

  • Barring any setbacks, wide receiver Denarius Moore looks to be a lock to face the Dolphins.

"He looked like the Denarius of old,'' quarterback Carson Palmer said. "He made a couple phenomenal catches.''

Moore said his conditioning is much better than a week ago, when he was bending over and gulping for air in between routes.

  • Allen confirmed that cornerback Ron Bartell is out with a broken scapula, as reported by ESPN on Tuesday. He said he didn't know how long Bartell would be out or if surgery was required.

  • Wide receiver Jacoby Ford underwent successful surgery to repair damage from a "Lisfranc'' condition in his left foot, Allen said.

  • Middle linebacker Rolando McClain sat out practice with an ankle injury along with running back Taiwan Jones (ribs), Condo and Bartell.

  • Center Stefen Wisniewski opened with the first-team offense during warm-ups and drills.

  • Defensive end Brandon Bair was added to the practice squad along with cornerback Coye Francies, who was released from the 53-man roster last week. Released from the practice squad were defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, wide receiver Brandon Carswell and linebacker Nathan Stupar.

Defensive tackle Kade Weston of Georgia tried out Tuesday but was not signed.
