ALAMEDA -- The Raiders have released cornerback Ron Bartell and fullback Owen Schmitt in order to reinstate middle linebacker Rolando McClain and promote cornerback Chimdi Chekwa from the practice squad, the club announced Monday.

McClain is back on the 53-man roster after spending two games on the reserve/suspended list, but won't return to the team until after me meets with coach Dennis Allen to determine his fate.

Allen is out of town, attending the future of his father and is expected to be back for Wednesday's practice.

According to a team press release, ``At some point after his return, coach Allen will meet with McClain to discuss the linebacker's role.''

Bartell was benched in a 34-10 loss to Cleveland after giving up a 44-yard touchdown pass to Josh Gordon, with Phillip Adams coming in and getting an interception. Bartell returned after Adams had a concussion and played every snap in a 26-13 loss to Denver.

Adams was inserted for Michael Huff against the Broncos and had another interception, and Allen said he would be getting additional playing time.

The Raiders signed Bartell to a one-year contract for a reported $3 million after coming off a neck injury that cost him 15 games in his final season with the St. Louis Rams.

Bartell broke his scapula in the season opener against San Diego, was placed on the ``designated for return'' injured reserve list and returned on Nov. 11 against Baltimore. He started six games for the Raiders this season.

Neither of the cornerbacks the Raiders signed to be their starters in the offseason made it through the season on the 53-man roster. Shawntae Spencer had a severe foot sprain in Week 2 against Miami but was placed on injured reserve to make room for Bartell.

Schmitt played in 13 games with four starts as a blocking fullback and special teams player. He had two carries for one yard. The Raiders added fullback Jamize Olawale last week to go along with Marcel Reece, which made Schmitt expendable.

Chekwa a fourth-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2011, was a victim of the Raiders cornerback purge in training camp but was re-signed to the practice squad, where he has spent this season. He played in four games last season with one start.

  • Defensive tackle Richard Seymour, out for the last five games with a hamstring strain, was back on the field for the first time.

  • Running back Darren McFadden was going through warm-ups and drills with no sign of the re-injured high ankle sprain that caused him to be removed from the Broncos game.

  • Players who were not at practice included McClain and Tyvon Branch, who has neck and ankle problems.

  • Safety Akwasi Owusi-Ansah was re-signed to the practice squad.
