NAPA -- Raiders wide receiver Andre Holmes was suspended Saturday for the team's first four games by the NFL for being in violation of the league policy on performance enhancing substances.

A waiver claim by the Raiders last May 13, Holmes spent most of 2011 on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad and was active for seven games for the Cowboys last season, catching two passes for 12 yards.

Holmes, who attended Division II Hillsdale College like Raiders tackle Jared Veldheer, faced an uphill battle to make the roster before the suspension. He is eligible to practice and play in preseason games for the Raiders until the suspension takes effect.
