Authentically Tuscan as if hand-plucked from the sun-kissed Italian landscape, this magnificent estate adorns the end of a private drive in one of Saratoga's exclusive areas.
It took owners/contractors Roger and Wendy Mairose two years to study and research the architecture of Tuscan homes before they embarked on creating their eighth home, this time at 22000 Via Regina. From the stone and hand-honed hickory floors and antiqued roof tile to iron doors set in 12- to 14-inch walls and soaring exposed beam ceilings, the 8,600-square-foot estate is filled with fine craftsmanship, thoughtful design, hand-selected materials and a meticulous attention to detail around every corner inside and out. It is elegant and sophisticated while retaining a comfortable and countryside ambience.
Set on a three-acre hilltop parcel of land, the estate was completed in 2010 and features four bedrooms and four full and two partial bathrooms in the main house, a two-bedroom detached guesthouse with kitchen and full bathroom, Cabernet grape vineyard, six-car garage, wine cellar and tasting room, library, sewing room, home gym, and fruit orchard. The architect was Tom Sloan of Metro Design Group.
Integrated into the front courtyard is a flight of stairs to a viewing tower, an outdoor room overlooking the entire property and surrounding Saratoga hills. This unique space includes a wet bar, television and audio, and features radiant heated floors and thermal curtains.
The one-story home wraps around a spacious courtyard with deep loggias and multiple outdoor dining and retreat spaces, meandering pathways, and lush lawns. Custom iron framed glass doors are on either side of the long gallery that connects the bedroom wing with the main living areas.
The list of amenities in long and includes Venetian plaster walls with hand-painted murals by artist Salvador Rodas Guinea who lived on site for about 18 months while completing his artwork which includes a limestone bas-relief in the master bathroom. There are radiant heated floors throughout the entire home, 15-foot ceilings and solar panels that produce virtually the estate's entire power.
The estate is available fully furnished with exquisite interior design by Jacob Scherer of Da Lusso Design.
The main living areas include a formal living room that overlooks the front courtyard. The room features a hand-painted mural that spans an entire wall and a vaulted ceiling with exposed center beam.
A bevy of cooks would be quite comfortable creating culinary specialties in the kitchen that is a masterpiece of design and function. A hand-painted mural adorns the half-barrel ceiling. Leather finished granite counters cover two massive islands and counters set against the knotty alder custom cabinetry and hand-distressed hickory floors. The spacious and separate scullery with walk-in pantry and private access to the outdoors is a spectacular addition to the kitchen that is filled with a freestanding six-burner Wolf range with grill, double ovens and commercial grade Sub-Zero refrigerator.
The breakfast room and formal dining room are nearby and are elegant rooms for both casual and formal entertaining. Custom draperies on the tall windows in the dining room capture the warm and colorful tones of the antiqued roof tiles.
The adjoining family room has distressed hickory floors that lay a rustic foundation echoed overhead by the 15-foot exposed-beam ceiling. The adjacent home gym area is spacious and fitted with low-impact aerobic gym floors.
The temperature-controlled wine cellar/tasting room has the capacity to store more than 45 cases of wine on custom iron bottle racks. Brick-clad walls give the room an Old World charm throughout its 400 square feet of space.
At the opposite wing is a glass, is a double glass door entry into the library that features floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves and two sets of iron glass doors to the front courtyards.
The master bedroom has its own access to a picturesque loggia and courtyard. The volume ceilings and windows provide lots of natural light. The master bathroom is luxurious with double sink vanity, large walk-in closets, radiant heated floors and walls in the stone shower and freestanding air-jetted bathtub. The three additional ensuite bedrooms have private bathrooms and large walk-in closets.
