PINOLE -- The Original Mels Diner will host a fundraiser Tuesday for a group of East Bay high school Interact clubs, the restaurant and a student announced this week.

Mels owner Mike Ghaben said 15 percent of the restaurant's proceeds from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. will go to the Interact clubs. The participating clubs are at Pinole Valley, Hercules, Middle College, De Anza, El Cerrito, Berkeley and Salesian high schools, said Alex Hale, the Middle College student coordinating the fundraiser. Middle College high is in San Pablo. De Anza and Salesian are in Richmond.

Hale said the funds will go to Asante Africa, an Oakland-based foundation with offices in Kenya and Tanzania that promote education for African children.

Interact clubs are service clubs for young people sponsored by Rotary International and local Rotary clubs.

In addition to the percentage of the evening's take, Ghaben said he will present Hale with another $300 previously pledged to Interact clubs.

The Original Mels-Pinole is at 1441 Fitzgerald Drive in the Pinole Vista shopping center.
