RICHMOND -- A Richmond mother and her boyfriend appeared in court together Friday afternoon for the first time, answering to murder charges in the slaying of her estranged husband.
Alicia Ortez and Amador Ortiz, whose arraignments were postponed Friday, are accused in the shooting death of San Pablo resident Oscar Anguiano following a months-long custody battle for the married couple's three kids, ages 12, 6 and 2.
Ortez and Ortiz allegedly drove to Anguiano's home Sunday night. After an argument, two shotgun blasts were heard and Anguiano was found dead outside his residence the next morning, according to a prosecutor. The boyfriend is accused of shooting the shotgun and stealing a car to drive to the house. He also has a 2013 drug possession charge pending, while Ortez was also charged with drug possession with intent to sell in this case, according to court records.
Anguiano had recently been awarded custody of the children and a prosecutor said she had allegedly threatened to kill her estranged husband, herself and her children on different occasions.
After the husband's body was found, the California Highway Patrol issued a brief statewide Amber Alert before the children were found unharmed a few hours later at the Richmond home of Ortiz's parents.
On Friday, an interpreter translated the judge and attorney remarks to both Ortez and Ortiz, who stood next to each other in a holding cell. Ortiz is being held on $1.32 million bail and Ortez on $1.12 million.
Neither entered a plea Friday and they are scheduled to return to court June 19.
