A 20-year-old man has been arrested after authorities said he shot and killed his friend after a night of marijuana smoking and gunplay with a stolen gun.
The slaying victim was identified as Tony Jones, 20, who was shot and killed at 9:30 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of Bartlett Avenue, not far from his home in unincorporated Hayward, Alameda County Sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said Thursday.
Jones was shot in the chest and died at the scene, Nelson said.
Initially, police were told by people at the house that Jones was shot in a drive-by shooting. But Nelson said the story quickly unraveled when deputies learned that one of the men, Stacy Fixico, of San Lorenzo, and another man, who police declined to name, were shooting a .22 caliber gun in the air while on the grounds of nearby Royal Sunset High School in Hayward earlier Monday night. School was not in session at the time.
Later, the two men met up with Jones and the three of them went to a balcony on Bartlett Avenue and smoked marijuana, Nelson said. At some point during the evening, police said Fixico fired the gun, killing Jones. Police are continuing to investigate if the shooting was an accident.
Police traced the gun to a home that had recently been burglarized near Fixico's residence.
Taken in the burglary were a .22 caliber handgun, a rifle and a vintage World War II U.S. Navy knife belonging to the resident, a 93-year-old WWII veteran.
Fixico is being held on $145,000 bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on burglary and weapons charges while the Alameda County District Attorney's office reviews the case for a possible murder charge.
