Ever wondered what happens to the money we all spend buying Girl Scout cookies? The 11 members of Brownie Troop 30677, third-graders at Green Valley Elementary School in Danville, donated half of their 2012 cookie sale profits, more than $350, to the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area on Dec. 5.
"The girls selected this particular charity, as one of the members, Ella Drucker, has a younger brother with Down syndrome," said Amy Santo Domingo, of Alamo, the troop's leader. "We all went together, and the girls got to have a tour of the center after we dropped off the check. It was wonderful to be able to show them the spot and hear directly about the center."
Ella and her little brother, Will, are the children of Katy and Joe Drucker, of Danville. Will is at the Down Syndrome Connection regularly for speech therapy and play groups.
The Down Syndrome Connection seeks to promote the contributions of children and adults with Down syndrome by providing direct services to them and their families, and to educate the general public by fostering inclusive and integrated involvement with the Down syndrome community and society at large. They have "step" classes conducted by age group (for children 6 and younger, for ages 7 through 18 and for adults 19 and older) that focus on developing core strengths, major and fine motor skills and social and friendship-building skills.
Amy said the other half of the troop's cookie sale proceeds will be used toward troop expenses, including the cost of badges. Each of the Brownies earned a philanthropy badge in connection with the donation and a visit to the Down Syndrome Connection center.
The center, located at 101 J Town & Country Drive, has two fundraisers a year, the "Gala for Giving" in the spring and a "Step Up for Down Syndrome" walk in the fall.
"The Brownie troop's donation was a wonderful surprise," said Nancy Labelle, executive director. "What was even more wonderful was that they asked some really great questions about Down syndrome and how open and warm they were. Ella was so proud of her little brother, and she was so proud of her family having the largest number of walkers -- over 100 -- on our fundraiser this year."

FOOD DRIVE: Congratulations to the Blackhawk Country Club community. In their 25th annual food drive Dec. 4, community members donated 11,453 pounds of food and collected $22,311 for the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano.
