    Night riders

You might think it's scary enough to ride a bicycle down the steep, twisting roads on Mount Diablo in daylight, but some riders try to amp up the thrill by sneaking into the park to ride illegally in the middle of the night.

Rocks, mud and pine cones falling on the ride are obstacles, but that's not the only risk.

"Some riders think there is no vehicle traffic to contend with at night after the gates are locked, but that could be a dead-wrong assumption," said Roland Gaebert, the recently retired superintendent of Mt. Diablo State Park.

Park employees and contractors sometimes drive the roads at night. Gaebert recalls one cyclist, apparently unaware of this, who was riding in the dark on the wrong side of road on a curve when a contractor's truck nearly struck him. The cyclist left the park pronto before rangers could catch and ticket him.
