School to host 'Festival Around the World'

John Baldwin Elementary School will host its first international night Feb. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 741 Brookside Drive.

The event is titled "Festival Around the World" and will include an evening of cultural experiences with the traditions, clothing, foods and fun of many cultures. Children attending will be given a passport to get stamped at every "port of call." Local performing groups will share international music and dancing onstage. The event is free.

Get a sneak peek at summer fun

Get an early look at Danville recreation programs, classes and events coming this spring and summer at the Recreation Expo on Feb. 9. The expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Danville Community Center, 420 Front St.

Parents will be able to meet with a variety of class, aquatics and summer day camp teachers who will be able to answer program questions. Expo visitors who register that day will get 10 percent off sign-up fees for classes and camps listed in he Spring Activity Guide and the summer camps brochure. See what the stars have to offer you

The city is offering a free astronomy night at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at Old Ranch Park, 1000 Vista Monte Drive.

Participants will be able to see the moons of Jupiter, star clusters, spiral galaxies and gaseous nebulas using the telescopes of the Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society.

Families are encouraged to attend. Participants should wear warm clothes and bring a flashlight. Hot cocoa will be served.

The night is part of the "Thank You, San Ramon" program -- a series of free events described in a news release as the city's way to thank residents for making San Ramon "a wonderful place to live, work and play."
